Former AAA Mr. Football, Best of Preps player Abe Felix dies
By John Varlas of The Commercial Appeal (October 10, 2015)

Abe Felix — who won the TSSAA’s Mr. Football Award in 2002 after a record-setting career at Houston — has died at the age of 30.

His death was announced at Houston’s game against Arlington Friday. No other details were available.

“He was a one of a kind player,” said Tim Haney, who coached Felix at Houston. “And he was a very good person. He was never in any kind of trouble and everybody loved him.

“He was the one that really got Houston football over the hump — he was our only Mr. Football — and he got the program to where it is today.”

Listed at just 5-6 and 172 pounds, Felix led the Shelby-Metro area in rushing in 2001, finishing with 1,788 yards during the regular season. That year, he also set the area record for carries in a season (373) as Houston finished 10-4 and advanced to the state semifinals before losing to Hendersonville.

The next year, Felix was named 5A Mr. Football and also won the Pepsi Best of the Preps player of the year award after gaining 1,818 yards and scoring 22 touchdowns. He remains Houston’s all-time leading rusher.

fter graduating, he was a standout performer at Northeast Mississippi before finishing his career at West Georgia.

To the Friends and Family of Abe,

Please accept my deepest sympathy. It is so unnatural and painful to lose someone in death at such a young age. But be assured that Jehovah God yearns to reunite children with their parents by means of the resurrection. In the account at Mark 5:40-42, Jesus lovingly demonstrated what his Father will do for us in the future when he resurrected a 12-year old girl and returned her to her parents. "The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life" (John 5:28,29)

Love Always

August 15, 2016

I first met Abe and Jeff in 1992 when I moved to the neighborhood where they already resided. The first day we met, we were all playing in the community pool house, which had sliding glass doors. We were playing hide and seek, and if you were hiding and someone found you, you had to jump into the pool before they tagged you. Well, one of the other kids we were playing with found Abe, so Abe took off running...straight through the closed glass door! And it didn't phase him one bit! From that day on, we were all inseperable. Many friends came and went, but Jeff and Abe were always there. I say Jeff and Abe because wherever Jeff went...Abe wasn't far behind. So my heart goes out to Jeff and the rest of the family. Which is a family that I became part of, as they also became a part of mine. We all grew up together.

I say all of that to say this: in over 20 years of closely knowing Abe, there is not a single negative thing that I can say about him. If he was a 10 as a football player, then he was a 10,000 as a person. Never once did I EVER hear him say a negative word about another person, much less do anyone wrong. I can honestly and without a doubt say that I've never in my life met anyone with a better heart than Abe. My mother put it best when she said that Abe was always "such a sweet boy...a good boy". It breaks my heart knowing that Abe has passed on. But...if there is a heaven, Abe Felix is without a doubt in it. Rest peacefully Abe. Thank you for all of the memories...you know I love you with all of my heart.
