Let the memory of Adam be with us forever
Cpl. Adam J. Chitjian of Philadelphia, Pa., grew up in the Somerton section of Philadelphia and graduated from George Washington High School. He worked as a commercial painter until joining the Army four years ago in response to 9/11. Adam was deeply affected by the September 11 terrorist attacks and had served fours years in the Army at time of his death. It was in Texas where he met Shirley, who would become his wife. They married in the summer of 2006, after he returned from his first tour of duty in Iraq. The couple have no children. He had been a commercial painter since graduating from Northeast Philadelphia's George Washington High School. He had talked of possibly joining a private security firm at the end of his duty in Iraq. He was called "Pappy" by the others in his squad because of his maturity. Adam was Posthumously Awarded a Bronze Start and Purple Hert plus Promoted to the rank of Corporal. His mother, Edith Curcio Chitjian, died in 1998. He died in Balad, Iraq, of injuries sustained when he came in contact with enemy forces using small arms during combat operations at age 39. Burial was private.
