Al Carlson

March 19, 2011

ALLAN HOWARD CARLSON
Allan “Al” Carlson was born June 6, 1935 in Missoula, Montana and died May 16, 2010
He was the son of Earl Howard and Ruth Candace Davis Carlson.
Al spent his early years growing up in Hamilton, MT. Living and working on farms in the area.
Al attended Hamilton High School and later attended Harbor College, San Pedro, CA and UCLA.
In the early 1950’s Al left Montana and came to California seeking work. He worked various odd jobs until he was hired at North American Aviation in 1953. North American Aviation was later to become Rockwell International and is now Boeing Corporation.
Al worked for Rockwell for 37 years, retiring in 1990 to fulfill his dream of sailing around the world. While at Rockwell, he started out as a riveter and worked his way to become Manager of final assembly of the space shuttle. Al was involved with the space program from the very beginning. Working on the Apollo program and finishing with the last of the shuttles now in existence. He had many fond memories of the people he worked with, the astronauts he met, and the work he did there.
He was always very proud to have been a part of history with his work on the space program.
In 1966, Al earned his private pilot’s license.
He was crew chief in the Marine Corp Reserve for 6 years.
He taught drafting at Cerritos College in Cerritos, CA. .
Al was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Retired Teachers Association and the GEEZERS.
He enjoyed music, sailing, computers, photography, watching old western movies and airplanes, but most of all, he enjoyed his time with family and friends.
Al was a master story teller. He could tell a story and have you wondering if it was actually a story or if it was true. Like the time he ran off to join the circus. Which was actually a true story!
In 1990 Al and Jan sailed for 4 years to the South Pacific on his boat “Cool Change III”. Visiting many different countries and experiencing Al’s dream of sailing around the world. This was an experience of a lifetime for both of them.
Al was preceded in death by his parents and step father.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, of Lake Elizabeth, CA., children: Teri (Mike) McGeary of Wrightwood, CA., Candace Carlson of Kingman, AZ., Gary Carlson of Newhall, CA., Rick (Tammie) Carlson of Dolan Springs, AZ., Steve (Kathy) Carlson of Hurricane, UT., stepchildren Lisa Miller of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA., Kelly (Evan) Brainard of Santa Clarita, CA and Jodi Daniels of Lake Elizabeth, CA.
