Her Life

Obituary

September 29, 2011

Amelia Latempa, fondly referred to as "Grandma Millie" by many, passed away on September 26, 2011. She was married to Peter Latempa on April 5, 1959.

Millie studied art at the prestigious Art Students League in Manhattan and became an accomplished artist. Her many paintings, mostly acrylic and oils, have been displayed at several galleries and art shows over the years. Although she was often offered hundreds of dollars to purchase her work she seldom sold any. They had priceless sentimental value to her making it difficult for her to let them go. In addition to painting, Millie enjoyed dining out, theater, opera, museums and travel.  She also enjoyed gardening and spent many hours tending to the garden in the courtyard in front of her apartment building. Before starting a family Millie was employed by American Airlines as a ticket agent at Laguardia Airport. She took full advantage of the fringe benefit of free travel, her favorite destination being Acapulco Mexico.

Millie was very involved in the Washington Heights community in Upper Manhattan where she lived for the past 45+ years. She was an active member of the RENA Coalition and the Tenant's Association. She was the "go to" person in her apartment building anytime a fellow tenant had a complaint ranging from a leaky faucet to rent increases. Millie's charismatic personality always seemed to get results with even the most difficult landlords. She always had a place in her heart for charitable organizations and gave what she could as often as she could. Some of her favorites include Food for the Poor, Doctors Without Borders, Catholic Family Charities, Maryknoll Catholic Mission, Day Top Village and Save The Children.

Millie is survived by her husband Peter, her brother in-law Dominick, her three children, Joseph (Denise), John (Stacy) and Julie (David Zawalski), her grandchildren, Christina, Brian, Charisse (Gabriel Maysonet Sr.), Lisa and Brandon and her great grandchildren Gabriel Jr., Savannah, Nicholas and Brianna.  Millie was predeceased by her father Joseph Laky, Mother Maria (Tarnoki) Laky, Toth, Baum, her sister Martha Kresheskey (Joseph Kresheskey) and Uncle Jansci Tarnoki. Millie's family will receive friends on Monday October 3, 2011 at Williams Funeral Home, 5628 Broadway @ 232nd St. Bronx, NY 10463 from 3-5pm and 7-9 pm. Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Our Lady of Esperanza Church in Washington Heights at 9:00 am. Interment to follow at Tongore Cemetery, Olivebridge NY. Donations may be made in Millie's name to Save The Children 54 Wilton Rd, Westport CT 06880 or DayTop Village Foundation 54 West 40th St. NY, NY 10018.
