I've learned a lot from my father and one particular life lesson I'll never forget took place in the early morning hours of a fishing trip to Lake Castaic. I was about 12 at the time and always extremely excited to go fishing with my Dad. The sun had not yet risen, it was very cold, cloudy, and the wind was gusting and blowing hard. We did not know whether we would even be able to put a boat in the water to fish; I was very disappointed. After finishing a thermos of coffee, my father stepped out of the warm vehicle to relieve himself and after a couple moments of thought I decided to do the same...both standing on a ridgeline vista overlooking the lake in a blanket of fog.
Suddenly I feel droplets and exclaim..."Dad, now it's starting to rain!"
With a short pause and chuckle he replied... "Son... I'm taking a leak and you are downwind...think about it".
Life lesson learned...always check your surroundings and know which way the wind is blowing!
