Shopping in Brooklyn with Nonna Anna

April 4, 2012

It was a Friday, and I called Nonna Anna's house and made plans to come into Brooklyn. It was a spur of the moment decision that I will always be grateful for. Joann, Nonna and I all went food shopping together. First to the butcher store. Nonna Anna filled her cart with all of the best foods you could buy. She was always cooking and feeding everyone. 2 weeks before that she made pasta with cauliflower for me. It was delicious, and always was one of my favorite meals that Nonna made. She sent me home with a bowl of it, and I ate it all the same night. How I will miss that pasta and cauliflower. But, not as much as I will miss you Nonna.

So, back to shopping in Brooklyn. At the butcher store, Nonna ordered beautiful steaks, and all of the finest foods. The young man that was taking care of her was a sweetheart, and I could tell that he loved her too. When we were finished shopping in the butcher store, Anna asked me to get her some water, so I ran back in the butcher store, and the young man who served us, heard Nonna needed water, and he went in the back and brought out water for Anna. I went to pay him and he wouldn't take the money. He gave it to Anna for free.

Then we headed over to Roll N Roaster in Sheepshead Bay, and Joann went to get the food, and Nonna Anna and I sat and talked heart to heart. We talked about my mom, my nephews, my son, and Nonnas 3 daughters. How she loved her girls. And her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Anna was an extremely cool woman for her age. She knew everything about what goes on in the world. You could talk to her about anything. Sex, Drugs, you name it, and she understood. The beautiful thing is that she didn't judge anyone. She had a heart as big as the ocean if not bigger. She believed that people could get better and change for the better, no matter how messed up they are. Everyone loved her, especially me. So, we talked heart to heart, and she kissed my hands and my face about 1000 times. We really connected that day, and I am so grateful that I got there to see her.We talked about some very emotional things, and I realized that she understood me and didn't judge me.

When we were done with lunch we went to KeyFood and did some food shopping. Joann and I worked our butts off. LOL Shopping and carrying all of the bags. It was an honor to help Nonna with her groceries. On the way home my son Joseph called me and he got on the phone with Nonna Anna. They were laughing so hard. They spoke their own language together, which I call Gabrussian. It's Gangster,Brooklyn/Russian. LOL Nonna and Joey laughed so hard speaking in their own little language. It made me feel so happy to see her laugh like that.   I will always remember that day, and I will always have beautiful memories of Nonna in my heart. I can still see her with the bible praying with my nephews when they were little. I can still see her looking so pretty, with beautiful skin and hair, and cooking all of the best food for everyone. GOD BLESS YOU NONNA ANNA. Rest In Peace. I hope when I get to heaven some day, that I will see you there. I know your with Poppa Louie, and I'm happy for that. But, we sure will miss you here. We love you Nonna Anna Russo. There's no other like you. I will love you and miss you forever. Xo Ox Xo Ox Xo
