This week we lost a great American hero and Aggie in College Station - Barney Welch.

His obituary is not complete without mentioning that he landed just after DDay in World War II and fought under General George S. Patton and in the Battle of the Bulge. After liberating France and Belgium, he stayed in the Army in Germany to guard the captured SS troops and rebuild.

He was the first Aggie to score a rushing touchdown in Austin at the War Memorial Stadium.

He was a top Southwest conference official for 30 years and ran the clock at Kyle Field for over 15 years.

Barney's ability to love others was his greatest character trait. Barney cared for his first wife for many years until her passing. He remarried, Pauline Martin Welch, in what became the greatest love story of all. They were inseparable and demonstrated true, unconditional love thru 18 years of marriage and his last two years in the hospice.

I am writing this that you may share what this humble man from Hico, TX did for our country and his family. Thank you.

Barry

Birthday

September 3, 2016

Today, Barney would have been 94 years old.  I miss him almost as much as I miss my own father.   He was kind, loving and never met a stranger.  This is probably the best thing he taught me.
