Haakon Ruben Sater

September 15, 2016

Haakon Ruben Sater was born on April 2, 1929 in Oakland, California to Helmer and Dina (Dyrnes) Sater.  He passed away peacefully on September 23, 2015 surrounded by his family in Concord, California.

Growing up in Oakland, he graduated from Castlemont High School in June 1947.  He always loved to tell the story of how his mother surprised him, following his graduation, and took him on a trip back to his parents’ home country of Norway.

Haakon proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as Radio Operator and Repairman in the 2D Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment until he was honorably discharged in 1953.

After receiving his honorable discharge at the age of 23 he returned to his home town of Oakland where he married the love of his life, Berenice Adelaide Huntley, known as “Bunny” to her friends and family.  They married on January 15, 1954 and spent 60 years together and were blessed with three sons.

Together with his brother’s Earl and Marshall, they operated a Union 76 service station in Oakland from 1954 to 1959.

Haakon entered the Carpenters Union and worked for Fiberglas for many years and later formed his own company working with his three sons.

Haakon loved to travel, enjoyed being outdoors and camping with his family.  He adventured up to Alaska a few times to try his hand at hunting as well as fishing, and traveled to Norway, Finland, Germany and Costa Rica.  Haakon & Bunny also loved traveling in their Fifth Wheel RV, and caravanned with family and friends throughout the United States.

Most of all he enjoyed life and loved spending time with family and friends.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He will be greatly missed.

Haakon was preceded in death by his parents Helmer and Dina Sater, brother Earl, and his wife, Bunny.  He is survived by his three sons,

Corey (Lorelei) of Antioch, Tyler (Debbie) of Hercules and Kenan (Kimberly) of Santa Cruz, his brother Marshall of Penn Valley and grandchildren, Nicole, Natalie, Kyle, Lauren, Craig, Cortney, Ryan, Joshua, Justin, Jeremy, and Jodi.
