Berenice Alicia Malcolm-Edwards, affectionately called “Bernice” and “B”, was born in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands on April 11, 1948 to the late Gibson A. and Paulina O. Lettsome Penn.  After a lengthy illness, she departed this life on March 7, 2015.

Berenice was educated in the St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and New York City School Systems.  She relocated to NYC in 1965, and it became her new home.  While there she was employed for many years with the American  Baptist Churches of Metropolitan New York until her early retirement due to health reasons.

During her illness, her daughter Monique was faithful and ensured that she received the best possible care.

Berenice loved her husband, children, grandchildren, other relatives, friends, and "cats".  She often shortened her trips to be sure her cats were safe and well cared for.

On several occasions, she served as caretaker for relatives who were ill.  She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and spoiled them with her great cooking.  She was an avid reader and CNN lover, and kept everyone up-to-date with political and world news.  “B” was carefree, friendly, fun-loving and hilarious. Everyone who met her fell in love with her.  She was truly “one of a kind.”

Left to cherish her memory:  husband, James “Nick” Nixon; children, Tyrone Benjamin, Gary Malcolm, Monique Malcolm Herron (Ben); Grandchildren, Quinn Griffin, Zane Griffin, Jasmine Malcolm, D’Alanzo Benjamin, Tyrill Benjamin, Kiza Benjamin; siblings, Lorna Jerome (Marc), Calvin Penn (Lorna), Louise Penn-Flamer, Alfred Penn and Louis Penn; childhood friend, Doris Battiste; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other beloved relatives and friends.

Berenice’s spirit will live on in our memories and we will have her love in our hearts forever.  She is now free and resting in peace.
