Her Life

In Retirement

January 18, 2014

Berta remained active in the Retiree Chapter of the Broward Teacher's Union. She did volunteer work and participated in many social  programs. She often spoke of how much she enjoyed her time with her BTU friends.

As fate would have it, shortly after she retired, Berta attended an affair at which people were dancing the Electric Slide. She was inspired to take line dancing classes and the rest is history…

…after taking multiple classes she was ready to venture into the club scene. Remember Doo Dah's? Next came Davie Junction, Western Star, Gone Country, plus a few we can't remember.

And then there was her home away from home: Round Up (not the herbicide). The people here (instructors, staff, and fellow dancers) were her second family (maybe her first).

She lived to dance…

Her Career

January 18, 2014

In 1967, Harry took a leap of faith and accepted a job in FLORIDA! The family moved in the middle of a snowstorm. Dad had moved several months ahead of the family so mom had to dig the car out of the garage to get us on our way south.

Berta started working as a substitute teacher for the Broward County School Board. It didn't take long for her to get her own classroom at Davie Elementary School.

Within a few years, she transferred to a brand new facility: Cooper City Elementary School where she taught until her retirement in 1994. She recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1989.

Raising a Family

January 18, 2014

Susan was born early in 1952. Berta and Harry were still living with her parents on Barker Avenue in the Bronx.

They bought their first home in 1953 in Peekskill, New York. An idyllic environment to raise a family…

…in 1954 Beth was born, followed by Irene in 1956, and Chuck in 1959.

To make ends meet during these lean years, Berta had many "odd jobs" such as baby-sitting for several neighbors, nights working a lunch counter, and on weekends she did party-waitressing. We loved it when she brought home left-over wedding cake!

The College Years

January 18, 2014

Berta chose Brooklyn College — there were men there!

She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and graduated with honors in 1950.

While there, she met an eligible bachelor and World War II veteran — Harold Field. They shared many long hours together, commuting on the subway.

Berta and Harry were married on January 22, 1950.

The Early Years

January 18, 2014

Berta was born in 1929 to Jean and Isadore August. As a child (and also as an adult!) Berta was self-described as "contrary" — she did what SHE wanted!

As a toddler, she participated in a Shirley Temple look-alike contest. Alas, she did not win.

At a young age (6 or 7) Berta and a cohort broke into a concrete tile factory to explore. When accused, she denied everything. Unfortunately, their footprints in the concrete proved otherwise…

Berta LOVED school. She attended a very small public school until the 6th grade. She attended an all girls high school and was NOT happy about it.
