This memorial website was created in the memory of our mother, Betty Martin, 83, born on June 29, 1929 and passed away on February 4, 2013.

Throughout her life, Betty was a fierce advocate for the underserved in her community as well as a dedicated supporter of the arts.

We have followed Mom's passion in choosing programs for gifts in her memory. Gifts to the Ellington Fund, Duke Ellington School of the Arts will support students most in need - with essential supplies and specialized coaching.  Memorial grants to the Byrd brothers' funds will help ensure more talented young musicians are able to pursue training in both classical and jazz guitar.

Hi Mama.
You have three great grandchildren now. Each is so beautiful and a joy to watch them grow. Laura and James’s Connor would make you cackle. Colin and Sarah’s Sofia and Sebas are growing up in Medellin Colombia. Sofia climbs everything - fearless!! And so very sweet with Sebas who also has a smile that would melt your heart. I see your kindness and loving sweetness in them all as if you’d touched them to share it. Oh! a baby sister for Sofia and Sebas is expected in mid-June.

Yesterday Michael and I enjoyed a delicious sushi dinner to celebrate his birthday - 64 times around the sun. It is wonderful having him near. He is such good company.
Thank you for giving him his day in 1960. Thank you for holding to one more day 11 years ago because, saying good bye to you the next day was so hard. You were thinking ahead as always ❤️ Now each year this is a moment to celebrate life from end to end - grateful for the richness of now in love and memories.
I miss you, mama. I love you forever.
