How We Remember Our Father

December 27, 2010

Billy Dave Mason was born on April 6, 1932 in Dublin, Kentucky.  He had two older siblings and was a member of Obion Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was baptized when he was 16 years old.

At the age of 19, he left Kentucky and moved to Detroit, Michigan.  He obtained employment at Chrysler Corporation but was laid off a year or so later.  He then joined the United States Air Force and was sent to Korea in 1952-53, during the Korean War.  After he was honorably discharged in 1955, he moved back to Detroit and resumed his job at Chrysler.  In 1959, he was transferred to St. Louis, Missouri.  It was here that he met our mother and together they had four children.  He loved St. Louis and made it his home.  Our father had a strong work ethic and retired after being employed at Chrysler for more than 43 years.   He enjoyed his retirement and filled it with traveling, visiting family and spending tme at his clubhouse with his friends and family.

To some it may appear that he lived an ordinary life bu our father was not an ordinary man.  He was tall, handsome and will be remembered for his million dollar smile.  He had many friends and was well-loved by his children, friends and family.  He was well-known for his commanding presence, quick wit, funny one-liners and his ever present toothpick.  He also had the mind of an engineer and was always thinking of ways to make things better or how to build things.  As children, we remember greasy hands from working on cars in his spare time and in later years, motorizing his bicycles-not to mention his household innovations.  The things Daddy would do!

He was authentic in everything he said and did and loved life.  He was a man of few words but his words spoke volumes.  He was generous and fair with us and always made sure we had everything we needed.  Self-discipline was his strongest trait and he taught us life lessons we will treasure always.  We never doubted his love for us.  He recommitted his life to Christ and now resides in Heaven with our Lord and Savior.

He is survived by his four children, 1 son in law, 2 daughters in law, his 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and one on the way.   His great-granddaughters will long hear stories about Pop-Pop.  He also leaves to mourn his loss, his sister in law and his best friend.   He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will also mourn him, but remember him with love.
