His Life

His life began on November 25th 1934 in Teaneck, NJ. He was the only child of the late Gustav Robert and the late Doris (MacDonald) Holzschuh. His athletic ability earned him a scholarship to play basketball at Clemson University and was on the starting line-up between 1953 and 1956. He also was featured in Life Magazine in 1955 as a basketball player in the south. He graduated with a degree in Textile Engineering in 1956 and started his professional career as a manager at American Viscose Corp (later FMC) in Marcus Hook, PA.

He married the love of his life Emily Susan Maxwell in 1959 in Wilmington, DE. They were married for 56 years. In that time, they had three children Richard, John and Patricia. In 1977, Bruce and his family moved to West Point, GA where he began his career with West Point Pepperell and became Director of Research. And in November 1990 he took on the added responsibilities of becoming Director of Grifftex Chemicals in Opelika, AL. Bruce was always active in the community and in athletics like tennis, volleyball, softball and of course basketball.
 
While living in Wilmington, DE he was on the board of directors for Lane Swim Club. He was also very active in the Cathedral Church of St. Johns many times serving as lector. Bruce served on the Board of Directors and as the Past President of the Board at Lanier Memorial Hospital. And, for his commitment to the hospital he received the George H. Lanier Distinguished Service Award in 2005. He continued to be involved at the hospital, serving as a volunteer sharing smiles and jokes with everyone. He was known lovingly as “Mr. Bruce.” He was also Past President of the Valley Area United Fund.
 
Bruce was able to pass on his love of basketball as the coach of the JV Girls team at Springwood Academy in Lanett, AL. And, he was well-known in the athletic program at Springwood volunteering in many roles including serving as the “Voice of the Wildcats” football team on WRLD-Radio.
 
He was a dedicated and active member of the First United Methodist Church of West Point in which he taught Sunday school, served as an usher and was Past President of the Ad Council.
 
He was a committed and loving father, grandfather and husband.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren Bruce Henry (Harry) and Thomas Maxwell Crosby, Kristin Schumann and her husband JD, Vicky Boyle and her husband Brian.
He was also great grandfather to Austin Boyle and Ella Schumann. They will all miss his happy and outgoing personality, his never ending source of energy and sense of humor. And, he was well-known for his fanaticism for  the Clemson Tigers!
