Larrrrry!

January 29, 2012
I will always remember Abuela Yelling for Lorenzo "Larry" Rodriguez. Out the window with her raspy voice. She was always yelling at him. But she loved him. Because what grandmother would take in a pre teen. At her age. She was an amazing woman. What I never understood was that she was so into the spirits and saints and she never hit the lotto. If I were her I would be up in heaven. Kicking some butt.

Bringing strangers home

January 29, 2012

I remember one very cold winter day in the Bronx, New York City...we lived on Union avenue in the heart of the Bronx where all the jewish stores were. They sold everything there from clothing to furniture. My mother and I were going to the grocery store to pick up some milk. One the way my mother noticed a young mother with two small children, a small boy and a little girl. She was carrying a suitcase. She stated she just arrived from Puerto Rico and could not find the address that she was given to find her cousin. My mother took her home and called the spanish radio station to announce if anyone knew this woman and her children. She offered her a bed and food. The woman spend a few days at our home. On the third day my mother got a phone call from the radio station they got a call from her cousin who lived in Brooklyn. She finally found her family. I realize that day that my mother was a very special woman and that is why I chose my career to be help others.
