His Life

Dr. Burian Carew

Dr Carew was a foremost technology visionary and a founding father of Nigeria's liberalized telecom industry.


He graduated from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, U.S.A in 1967 with a degree in Engineering Physics. He obtained his Masters and Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada in 1969 and 1973 respectively.He was also a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and he belonged to the  Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE.


He was a distinguished and suave engineer, who with other professionals founded Telnet Nigeria Ltd, one of the earliest notable consultancies in telecommunications. He was an icon whose visionary leadership created the first generation of indigenous world class industry professionals.


In-house ideas germinated into the coming of iTECO, Softworks, TNS, ipNX, Techinvest, in steady succession and under his leadership, Telnet and ipNX grew to become successful, renowned and reputable Nigerian companies with strong ethical standards.


Dr.Carew was also instrumental to the creation of Nigeria’s first online payment gateway, Interswitch Nigeria Limited, where he served as a pioneer director.


Fondly called “Uncle B”, Dr Carew was a detribalized and cosmopolitan Nigerian who interacted with everyone on merit. He was highly respected, loved and revered by all around him. Though a consummate perfectionist, his calm, humble mien and simplicity made him supremely approachable. He was famed for his piercing gaze that kept one on his or her toes.


He was a loving husband and father, and an avid squash player


He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Markham and children - Quinton, Vanessa and Julia., the Carew family and all beneficiaries of the Techinvest-Telnet-ipNX legacy.
