His Life

Born in Hazleton, he was a son of the late Frank and Adelle (Schultz) Ferrari, spent his entire life in West Hazleton and Sugarloaf and was a member of St. John Bosco RC Church.

Cal graduated from West Hazleton High School in 1966 where he was an outstanding basketball player and participated in track & field.  He continued his education at East Stroudsburg University, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in education, and later earned his Masters Degree from Wilkes-University.

For many years, Mr. Ferrari taught Computer Science, Health and Physical Education at West Hazleton Jr/Sr High School where he served as Athletic Director for 11 years.  During his 7 year tenure as head coach of the girl’s varsity basketball team, he attained 3 consecutive Anthracite Girl’s Basketball League Championships.  He was a strong proponent of girl’s athletics and was instrumental for elevating girl’s basketball to the current level of popularity.

Cal retired from Hazleton Area High School as a teacher in the Health and Physical Education Department in 2006.   He served there as head coach of the girl’s varsity volleyball team for six years, winning a district title and currently has the most wins in school history.

In earlier years, as part of his commitment to area education, Cal worked part-time as evening administrator at the Hazleton Campus of Penn State University.

He was a member of the West Hazleton Knights of Columbus, the West Hazleton Game, Rod and Gun Club, an American Red Cross Certified CPR instructor and a life member of the West Hazleton Booster Club.  He also served as a volunteer coach for the GHYSA and CVCO basketball.

Cal was a founding member of Cedarhead Properties LLC, a real estate investment firm he established with his son Chad.

In his leisure time, Cal enjoyed golfing, gardening, canning, gourmet cooking and hunting.  But most especially, he enjoyed frequent trips to Atlantic City, visiting with his son Chad in Philadelphia and traveling with his wife on weekends.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, the former Patricia Marylee Horn; son, Chad Mark Franco Ferrari ofPhiladelphia; and many cousins and dear friends.

His family will receive friends at the Butler Chapel of Krapf & Hughes Funeral Home, 530 W. Butler Drive in Drums, on Tuesday evening from 7-9 PM.

Friends are also invited to attend a funeral mass that will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM in St. JohnBosco Church in Conyngham.  His cremated remains will then be interred with his parents in the Our Lady of GraceParish Cemetery.
