Acts of Kindness in a time of Sorrow
I will never forget mother Scates kindness on one of many Thanksgiving Day seasons. I had not known her very long and was in the early stages of dating her son Audrey. November 4, My son, 21 yrs old died of heart failure from a transplate heart he recieved at 11yrs old. That November was the hardest holiday to enjoy. We were in grief when mom ask us over for Thanksgiving Dinner. I had no desire to share, fellowship or to eat at that time, I was so overtaken by his sudden death, but I went to the dinner.
I arrived at the house only to find that no one else had been invited but my family and mom cooked a delicious meal for just us . She served me with kindness and brought out her best table settings. She embraced me with gentle and comforting words as a mother who was hurting for her own . All I could think about was she cancelled her traditional Thanksgiving dinner with her large family just for me and mine, yet only I and Audrey were the only ones there . She let me know that she understood my children not coming and that in her home was not just us ,but the love of Jesus Christ and his angels there dining with us, in a time of grief and heaviness . She put my family before her own family tradtions and it was truly an Act of KINDNESS to be remembered, with many other memories.:
Like the time she volunteered go with me to find for my daughter's first prom dress and in her 70's out walked me in the downtown streets called " Garment District" to find the right dress for my daughter. I was tired but Mom was strong and never got tired until we found the right one . I have to say she had good taste and knew what was fitiing for the occassions at all times . Thanks mom for all you shared with me
Honesty Lessons
I'll never forget the time that I decided I wanted a pack of cards from Safeway. Mom had already told me to put them back, but I felt like I should still have them, so I slipped them in my pocket. When we got to the car, I pulled them out while she loaded the groceries into the car. When she got in the car, she didn't yell! She calmly told me to pack up the cards. We walked in the store......I had to tell the manager that I had taken them, and that I was sorry! Needless to say I was sooooo embarrassed, but I never stole again.
