My Memories of Chris

June 22, 2014

Chris and I may not have had the same bond as say my two boys and my daughter, however some of my fondest memories come from Marion and this country boy. Chris was always asking me to go fishing or hunting with him, and on several occasions I took him up on it. I particularly remember one season I came from Houston Tx just to do what Chris liked to do most, go after . Mr. Whitetail Buck. That trip is remembered so well for several reasons. Chris' truck was broke down for 1 and we used my El Dorado as a hunters up scale display for whatever big rack we killed. Another was sighting in my 270 at 100yrs which had never been sighted in period. We had gone to one of his kin folk who lived back off a lonely county rd with a Hugh distance between the front porch and the road. Sitting on the front porch and shooting at a paper target proved to be slightly expensive. I say this because We shot a complete box of Federal Ammo without even clipping that target. I suppose 25yrs to start would have more productive. The night before the hunt we stayed up all night having conversation, joking around while we worked on a 1/2 gallon of Crown. Just before daylight Chris decided he needed some shuteye before the hunt so he retired to his bedroom. About 5:30 that morning we started calling to Chris to leave to get to our perspective locale before the deer started on the move. I must have called him a 1/2 dozen times without a response. I got this idea to wake him. I opened my gun case took out my deer grunt walked to his bedroom door opening it slightly and giving him a mellow grunt. He Sat straight up in the bed and said,"y'all ready to go"? We spent most of the morning all over the woods in Marion Alabama looking for that perfect rack which never came. But being with my favorite 2 Chris' (my son and nephew) was a memorable experience. There are several times we spent in the forest or on the banks of The Black Warrior River. Chris you were one of the best Woodsmen I ever had the previlage of knowing. Not only that, but you made every time we spent together better than the last. You knew how to make any situation fun, even when the tire blew on your boat trailer that day we spent on the river.  I miss you little buddy, as I know so many others do. I look forward to a time we can once again fish the rivers of heaven. I love you still. RIP
