Two weeks ago today I was visiting Cornell again. I walked into Sibley Dome and stopped by the office that I shared with Cynthia from 1986 -1990. Such happy memories of my dear, dear friend!

There are women who leave more than a memory in life, and Cynthia was for us an example to follow, a motivation to live for and a real gift that God sent us. It's easy to be sad about a loss this great, but the love and affection that she left in our hearts is strong enough to smile and always give thanks for having her in our life. God bless you now and forever Cynthia.

Dear Chris, Eric & Jenny - I am so thankful to have met your Mom. I will never forget the wonderful luncheon she hosted for all of us at Cornell. She gave us a great tour of the campus and even bought my three year old son a Cornell sweatshirt. It was an event I will never forget. I truly know how heartbreaking the loss of a parent can be. Take special care and cherish the memories.

eric,jen,pam,chris-- "CKP" was a wonderful wife to my father. She was so dedicated to him. Her love and kindness has kept him going for 20 some years. She was a great teacher, advocate and cook. I will never forget all of the nice things she did for both myself and Mel. She was always willing to help out anyone. She always listened to me when my mom had issues and offered advice.

Cynthia was such a special person—clear-headed, strong-willed, and, yet, always understanding and compassionate. After she retired from Cornell she asked me to write several letters of recommendation for her. I was greatly honored by that request because I knew that meant she trusted me. I also knew how much she loved her family, and it is for each of you that I am praying.

Mel, Jenny,Eric and Chris. In everything she did Cynthia was a class act. She was a vivacious, strong willed woman who lived life to it's fullest. Very loving, compassionate and generous. A person who treated friends as family she made everyone feel valued and special. In the workplace she watched over her staff like a mother hen, taking a genuine interest in all of us.

Mrs. Norby, as I called her for many years, was one of my mother's dearest and beloved friends. Growing up in Brockport, I would look forward to her annual summer visit with Chris, Eric, and Jenny. It was always fun times filled with her amazing laugh. She bleached my jeans;taught me how to make real coffee;and advised me on my first Homecoming dress. I feel blessed to have known her.

A favorite anecdote about Cynthia was how she took in a stray kitten and to prevent her allergies from acting up, washed it under the kitchen faucet!. Only she would think of (and get away with) washing a cat! It exemplified her compassion, big heart and take action attitude. I loved her dearly and will always remember her as such a classy woman with the best sense of humor. Godspeed!

Oh Mel, what can I say. We sure had some great times with you and Cynthia at your home in Cortland. She was so much fun. Please share my regrets with the rest of the family and I will be thinking and praying for all of you. May you find peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Warm regards,
Bernadette

Ken Miller - Asa's spouse.
Cynthia was a person unique that faced challenges with grace and tenacity.
She was among the most successful people I have known.
Beauty, humor, grace, wisdom, truck driver subtlety when required, a true friend
a huge heart. Our lives were enhanced by being sprinkled with her Pixie Dust.

What an amazing woman! So full of life and very giving. When each of my children was born, Cynthia was the first one to send a special present for them to sleep with - each personalized with their name and date of birth - they are still my childrens' personal favorites! I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to get to know her and to realize how truly special she was!

I was saddened to learn about Cynthia's passing. We occasionally exchanged messages; perhaps the last was about two years ago when she wrote about enjoying her retirement and being with her wonderful grandchildren. Cynthia's many dear friends in the Cornell Chemistry Department join me in conveying our most sincere condolences to her family.

I will always remember 'Mrs Nordby' as a very strong presence throughout my childhood. She was such a dynamic woman -- smart and spunky with a great sense of humor.  I was always welcome at the Nordbys' house and I loved being around her and her family. Even though it's been years since I've seen her, I miss her very much.

Although sadness pervades at this time, I know you all hold on to and will carry forward Cynthia’s love of family, humor and intellect. Eric, I'm so very sorry and deeply saddened to hear this. Your mom in my minds eye was always so vivacious and full of life. I'm so sad for you and your family. I can recall like it was yesterday her having to endure my constant presence and travels to the basement for ping pong, as well as your relentless efforts to embarrass me with her...saying I don't like her cooking etc (wasn't true)

IN THE BEGINNING. .

November 21, 2011

OH this can't be true. . but it is and we all have to be grateful for the years, months, days or even for the one minute that we might have had the priviledge of knowing this extraordinary woman named CYNITHA.

One lovely Sunday afternoon, my husband and I, with our four children in tow, drove home from church in Short Hills, NJ and right behind us, into our driveway and into our lives, were Dag, Cynitha and their three small children, this was in 1974.  The explanation for this was simply explained by Cynitha, "I told Dag to follow you because I wanted to know who the new people were"  Now anyone who ever got to know this crazy lady, would know this is a true story.  We became fast friends and then they went their way, we went our way, but in all those years, we remained true friends through good times and bad times.  The humor, you see, was what got us through.  Oh, I will miss her.

It was always about the humor. . she hit the bulls eye every time. . I will miss her voice, her laugh, her getting the job done, like driving all the way from Cortland to New Jersey to read at my son's funeral and, then again, to read at  my daughter's wedding.  I will love her forever because she drove my daughter and I tob look at a college in upstate NY and wanted to drive back that night to get her because she didn't particularly like her hostess, because she welcomed me and my new husband into she and Mel's home(s) many times  and we always had a wonderful time. It won't be only me that will miss her, everyone will miss her, how could you not.  Love to all the family, Jane (Enright) Blais

Cynthia was sophisticated and classy, but very down to earth. She was a wonderful host who welcomed you into her home with a genuine loving nature. Her home always decorated with her great taste and creative flare.  She was always generous and gracious and had a great sense of humor. Her dry sense of humor and quick wit, especially when targeting one of her children always broke everyone up. I can picture her now delivering a little zinger looking over her glasses with a deadpan expression. She was also a great sport when on the receiving end of the humor that I am sure her children had inherited from her.  It only took a moment of talking to her to see how much she loved and cared for her children. She was a wonderful caring person who was always very kind to my family and me. My children love hanging up the Christmas ornaments that she had given them with their names on it. Although it has been some time since my family and I have been in contact with her, we think of her often with fondness and love. We will cherish the memories of her and count ourselves blessed to have known her.

"Cindy" and the Messers go back to the early days, (mid 1960's) in Syracuse.when Cindy and Dag were newly married. We were the "older couple" with two little girls.I don't think we had ever met anyone quite as vivacious, inquisitive, funny or smart. She was a whirlwind and oh what good times we had! Our most precious memories are the times she, the boys and Jenny spent with us on Cape Cod. Never to be forgotten were her pain-inflicted manicures she insisted on giving us. She became an ardent observer of our neighbors and dubbed them with appropriate nicknames. One memorable afternoon, she went out on our deck in the middle of a horrific rainstorm to smoke--a cigarette in one hand and an umbrella in the other while we all watched her through the sliding glass door lest lightnining should strike. Eventually, we were all transferred from New York, the Nordby's to New Jersey and the Messers to Massachusetts.  Visits still took place, but as our families grew it became more difficult. Cindy, however, was ever faithful writing wonderful letters which always included family photos. More photos enabled us to admire her gorgeous gardens from afar. Chris, Eric and Jenny I miss that unique laughter hers. She was one in a million, talented, lovely, caring, and all-round great gal! How fortunate you are to have had such an exceptional mother.

.My love to you all and my deepest sympathy.
