Let the memory of Cpl Nicholas be with us forever

Nicholas P. Olson was an adventurous, animated personality bursting with energy who learned to walk when he was 7 months old, family members said. He loved motorcycles, horseback riding, skiing - whatever got him out of doors, said his mother, Anita Moran. "He was home three weeks ago, and I gave him lots of kisses and hugs and he left home on the 28th and by the 18th he was dead," Moran said. "It's hard." Olson, 22, of Novato, Calif., died Sept. 18 in Muqdadiyah of wounds from an explosion. He was a 2003 high school graduate and was assigned to Fort Lewis. Assistant Principal Dan Curtaz, who was Olson's physical-education teacher when Olson was a freshman, called his former student "a young man with a lot of energy. He was a good kid." During his high school years, Olson was enrolled in a junior ROTC program, and always wore his uniform with pride, said Curtaz. "Those uniforms have to be tucked in in a certain way, nice and neat, and he definitely respected it in the right way," Curtaz said. He also is survived by his wife, Nicole, and Melody, a daughter who turned 1 in July.
