What The News Said

June 18, 2012

Omaha, NE - A young man killed in broad daylight brings dozens to mourn.  His family says he was shot and killed while walking to the store with another relative near Ames and 55th Street.  Antwan Jones, 25, was arrested for the murder.  Monday, family and friends rally in prayer at the crime scene. They are demanding the violence stops.

A father, son, and friend to many; family of Dejuan Johnson say they'll remember his positive energy but most of all his charming smile.  "He just always cheered me up just him being in my presence, it made me feel happy. I'm just always going to miss him," said cousin Damond Oliver.

He was shot and killed walking along Ames Street near 55th Street.  His family says they don't know the man who shot him.  "I'm just hoping the violence stops because it's getting out of hand," said cousin Mickey Jones.

His cousins are still in shock.  At a time when they feel so low, they're comforted by the messages and flowers left for Dejuan.  They see just how many lives he touched, how many people loved him.  "Just put a smile on every body's face, he was just a cheerful person and he's really going to be missed," said Jones.

Now, his daughter will grow up without her dad.  "He won't see her graduate, go to school the first day or anything like that," said Jones.

But his family says she will grow up knowing how much he loved his little girl.  "He was a real good father. A very good father," said Mickey Jones.

Police say murder suspect Antwan Jones, not related to Mickey Jones, was found hiding in an apartment complex a block away.  He's expected in court Tuesday.
