Oh Danny boy!

February 3, 2015

So growing up, Danny (as he was known) was quite the character.  He became a man at 13 (according to Jewish law) and completed his Hebrew classes for his bar mitzvah.  I found it quite funny that all the girls at his bar mitzvah were taller than all the boys, except for the girl he was dancing with.  This picture stuck in my mind for quite some time.

Amazed that bro had told me later on that he had very little memory of his growing up years.  And I remember alot of silly times we had as a family.  Wonder if it was selective memory on his part?  Or maybe his brain was filled to the brim with all those books he was constantly reading on "how to's"

Some of those book were how to win at chess.  As I was the bratty youngest, he would teach me enough to learn how to move all the pieces but never how to strategize, thus ensuring he would win each and every time!  A method to his madness.

His room became so filled with electronics and tools that he actually built a shed in our backyard to house all his "stuff" and even put a cot and heater in it so he could spend days holed up with his electronic doo dads.

One in particular that i will never forget was when he told me he was going to create lightning in my room.  Um, should I trust him not to electrocute me?  So he had built an osciliscope and had some kind of a coil, tesla or vandergraph type of thingamagig and did indeed proceed to amaze me yet again.

Needless to say, I have and always will look up to my big bro and all his scientific knowledge.  His motto was, anything can be learned from a book.  And he never stopped absorbing data.

Family!

February 2, 2015

I asked Daniel if he had unlimited money for travel, where would he go?  I was sure he would choose a sandy, remote island destination.

His response surprised me.  "I would gather up the kids, my sisters and their families, us, and get everyone together for a family reunion...anywhere."

Simple and powerful.  Family was always a huge source of happiness for him.

No shirt. No shoes. Lots of sharing!

February 2, 2015

I was having lunch with two friends.   One asked "what do you like most about Daniel?" I said "he will give anyone the shirt off his back." The other gal smiled and added "if he was wearing one!"

How true!  Daniel spent as much time as possible shirtless and shoeless ... lucky to live in Arizona!  When he was wearing a shirt, it was usually his favorite athletic tank:  "Go vegan and no body gets hurt!"

D, you were the best at sharing ANYTHING you had!  Love you and miss you tons!

Why did the chickens die?

February 2, 2015

My mom was a 4th grade teacher when we were young.  Whenever there was a long break from school, my mom would bring home whatever live animals they happened to have for her class.  So one spring break, she brought home chicken eggs in an incubator.  They then proceeded to go on an adult only vacation, leaving the 3 of us kids to take care of the incubator.  Our next door neighbor's grandma was on call if we needed any help.

The incubator had to be kept at a certain temperature at all times.  Daniel needed the outlet for a tool so he unplugged the incubator and meant to plug it back in when he was done.  Oopsy.

It was either Andrea or myself that noticed the incubator light was out and found the unplugged culprit and plugged it back in.

Some of the eggs did hatch but most didn't and the only chicken that was born, had a broken wing :(  Knowing it was done by accident, we didn't blame Daniel who felt really bad about what he had inadvertantly done.

Why my hair is curly

February 2, 2015

Daniel was so very smart on most subjects, he loved to take things apart and rebuild them and always had his head buried in books that taught him the mechanics of how things worked.  Unbenownst to me, his subject matter of the week was electricity.

One day, in walks my brother to my bedroom.  He was experimenting with electricity.  He told me he had something brilliant to show me and had me hold a wire in one hand and then told me to touch the other wire to it.  ZAPPPPPP!

He didn't cause me harm, but my hair has been curly ever since ;)
