His Life

A resident of Vung Tau, Vietnam, he passed away on December 2, 2011. He was 55 years old and a native of Baton Rouge. David was born March 9, 1956 and was a 1974 Graduate of University High School.  He traveled to many countries during the years he worked for Diamond Offshore Drilling; including Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, Egypt, Tunisia, New Zealand and Australia.  He began working in Vietnam and quickly settled there after falling in love with the town of Vung Tau. David was an active and generous member of the community, often organizing and participating in fundraisers for local children and families in need of medical treatment and other assistance they could not afford.  He is survived by his wife Xuan Thi Minh; his children, Sarah Irene Barber, Stephen James Barber and wife Rebecca, Victoria Barber Lipford and Margaret Ngoc Duyen Barber; a grandson, Dylan Eugean Lipford; his father, Harry William Barber, Jr.; two brothers, Harry William “Bill” Barber III and wife Kim, Niel Humphreys Barber; a sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Barber Spreen and husband Ernie; numerous nieces, nephews and other family; his former spouse and mother of his three oldest children, Kathy Barber Kilshaw; and the countless friends he made, both here and in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Dixon Humphreys Barber and his son-in-law Nathaniel Eugean Lipford. Memorial service will be Saturday, January 21st at Healing Place Church on Highland Road. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. and a service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
