He was my fearless little warrior , relentless , tenacious yet compassionate in his journey .  His light was an inferno always seeking the greatest adventure and challenges in life . I was fortunate along with so many others to embrace and be in his light and see a world that I couldn't see before.  He was my lighthouse and always will be until we are home together once again.  He was my little seal pup getting on my back plunging into the mysteries of life and holding on tight swimming together laughing , being silly having fun enjoying all those timeless moments reminding me how beautiful it was to be a child ... He will always be my guide and I will carry on his passion and the torch he passed to me to help others both human and furry friends..  I love you my Son ...  I write this from my eternal heart to yours.

A beautiful young man is gone too soon. I remember the spark in his eyes and the joy he had as a sixth grade boy in my class. He was kind, fun-loving, and a wonderful young boy who will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to Brett and the rest of his family. I remember Derek as being so proud of being at the same school where his dad taught. He used this relationship to advantage a few times to ask to check out books without his ID, but I couldn’t say no to him. He was always quiet and respectful and a pleasure to help. His parents loved him deeply - his death is felt by all.

I had the pleasure of knowing a very young Derek when he attended Kids Club. I remember his smile and wonderful energy. He was a joy to be around and will be remembered always.
