Don Strub Life

Dr. Don Strub DDS of Mill Valley, California, passed away on February 1st 2014, at the age of 83.  He passed away unexpectedly while on vacation with his wife on a cruise in New Zealand. Born in St, Louis, Missouri, he moved at an early age to Iowa City, Iowa. He received his BA, MA, and DDS degrees from the University of Iowa, and later did graduate radiology training at the Royal Marsden Hopital in London, England. He taught at Lowell High School in San Francisco and San Leandro High School prior to receiving his dental degree.

A born teacher, Don was a much loved and respected Professor of Radiology at the Arthur Dugoni University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco for 27 years. He taught over 3000 dental students and the student body named him Instructor of the Year on three separate occasions.  He was a member of the Delta Chi social fraternity, the Delta Sigma Delta professional fraternity, and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon and Tau Kappa Omega honorary dental fraternities.  He received the American College of Dentists' Distringuished Faculty Award, the Order of the Pacific from the University of the Pacific, served on the Public Health Radiation Safety Committee, and acted as the President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

As well as teaching, Don practiced his dental profession in Nevada, California, England, and Saudi Arabia.  He lectured widely in the United States, Europe, and the Middel East on radiology topics, and he was a highly respected consultant. He was a world traveler and had visited each of the 50 states.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lottie and his survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorriane, his sons Tracy (Jeniffer) and Fletcher (Jill Gariffo), daughters Kimberly (Winston Albert) and Cynthia (Robert Dietz) and grandchildren Spencer, Allely, Perrin, Zachary, Nicole, Attison, Wesley, and Joseph.

His family will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, a gifted teacher, mentor, and friend.

At his 50th wedding anniversary, Don proclaimed "...with a wonderfully marvelous wife, handsome, healthy, and intelligent children and grandchildren, it has really been a beautiful life."

According to Don's wishes, no formal services are being held. Contributions to the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry Scholarship Fund (2155 Webster Street, San Francisco, CA 94115) would be most appreciated.
