Her Life

Her Dad Always Present and Always Missed

September 22, 2010

She was about 3 months old when her dad died of pneumonia.  I don't know if he ever saw his daughter since he had been working out of state on bridge construction and when he got sick he just made it to his sister's in Atlanta where he languished for a few days before expiring.  Her mother was very poor but full of youthful make-do attitude made a life for them as a household servant in Birmingham for several years but long enough for mother to imagine that life would have been wonderfully better if her dad had lived and I suppose that her mother told her stories of her handsome husband that make him seem 10 feet tall and made of solid Gold.  Mother felt his absence for her entire life.  I have letters from her mother telling the family about Birmingham social life in the early 1920's before mother was born and how 'pretty' the boys were.  Mother became a beautiful young woman who loved her famiy and had a wonderful way with words, writing a history of Wayside Community, poems about Kennedy's assassination and other events, and a hymn of thanksgiving
