His Life
November 6, 2013

Douglas R. Eichbeger, son of Reinhart and Emma (Huwaldt) Eichberger was born July 4, 1923 in Plainview, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at the Stark Valley Metholdist Church of rural Plainview. He attended various schools around Plainview with his brother and two sisters. He worked as a hired hand for area farmers until he went to California and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. During WWII he was drafted into service in 1943 and served in Europe and received five battle stars with the 273rd Artillary Division of the US Army. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Douglas married Evelyn Bilau December 14, 1947 at Saint Johns Lutheran Church in Randolph. He was a member of Stark Valley Methodist Church, VFW 5330 and the American Legion.  He and Evelyn were blessed with five sons. He farmed, raised hogs, cattle and dairy cows south of Plainview throughout his married life. In April of 2008,  he became a member of the Norfolk Veterans Home, where he passed away, surrounded by his family.

Doug was well known for his cheerful disposition. He took great pride in his family and farming and was proud to share his birthday with the Independence Day of our great country. One of his favorite pass-times was being with his grandchildren and reminiscing with his sons. He also looked forward to the 273rd Army reunions that were held every August and attended as many as possible with his army buddies.  Much of his time was spent with his collection of anti
que tractors, gasoline engines and hand corn-shellers. Doug lived a life of faith and happiness that he graciously shared with his family and friends.
