Doyin's Story

January 16, 2016

Doyin Sarah Fagbenro, 25, passed away after being involved in a car accident, her heart quietly came to a rest after a strong yet brief battle with her injuries.

Doyin was born on November 28th, 1990 at Newham General Hospital in London, God’s first gift to her parents Dayo & Dupe Fagbenro. She was followed by two brothers Dayo and Dolapo, and finally a baby sister, Dotun, all of whom she often served as a friend, mentor, leader and certainly more often than not; peacemaker.

Doyin was very intelligent from a young age which quickly became apparent at Wigmore Primary School, where her educational journey began. On completion she moved on to the King’s School and shortly after to St Georges in Rome, where her academic ability became evermore apparent through her SAT scores. The family returned to the UK and shortly after she went on to shine in her academics throughout both her GCSEs at Dame Alice Harper School, and the gruelling International Baccalaureate at Bedford High School.

During her studies she had developed a passion for Law that she went on to pursue at Queen Mary’s University. She quickly found her feet here, and as a vibrant, popular and self-assured member of the student body she was soon appointed to various positions of responsibility within the Law and Afro-Carribbean Societies and went on to be recognised as a Rare Rising Star, one of the Top 10 Black Students in the UK.

After completing her degree, along with a number of work placements, Doyin fearlessly decided to pursue yet another passion, one for her country and culture, and relocated to Nigeria. It was here she began working towards completing her NYSC requirements, and finding her feet in Lagos after launching into yet another adventure.

This move was a testament to both her adventurous nature and her fierce independence, both of which truly pervaded all areas of her life. She was loving, attentive and caring and never shied away from offering her opinion. Strong (and often abrasive) as they may have been, they were always thoughtfully constructed from a place of love. Accompanied with her ability to empathise,  unquestionable loyalty and almost intimidating intelligence, these qualities ensured she would quickly gain the trust, respect and admiration of all fortunate enough to meet her.

Her relentless determination was an inspiration to so many, yet never deterred from her playfulness and love for life; she loved to laugh, party and smile and once her braces came off there was really no stopping her. Even through her most testing times she never lost her sense of humour and could always be trusted to lift the spirits of those around her.

She will be missed.

The whole family is touched by the display of love for Doyin in this difficult time and welcomes you to share your memories of her with us all, in her honour.
