The early years...

December 27, 2012

George Wong was the 5th born child, of the Chinese-Canadian Wong family clan headed by Peter Wing Wong.  Peter Wing Wong, a native of Baksa, Toishan County Guangdong Province, China arrived at the west coast port of Victoria BC in the 1890s as a young man. After working in Victoria for a number of years he returned to HongKong to marry Lan Tan Poon and subsequently returned to Canada in 1912.

The family began a journey through western Canada, we assume their travels percipitated by the work undertaken by his father Peter Wong.  Seven children were born in these many scattered locations with son George being born in Millet Alberta, August 18, 1920.

The untimely passing of Mother Lan Poon necessitated the dispersal of the siblings to various "relatives" in the Chinese community throughout western Canada for their care.   Included, was a brief soujourn for three of the children, Henry, Agnes, and Dorothy who were sent to Hong Kong China.

George was sent to live in Lucky Lake, Saskatachewan.   George had always indicated that he was a "good" student which eventually resulted in his entering the medical faculty of Univeristy of Alberta being the first Chinese Canadian student they accepted. He graduated with his medical degree in the class of 1946.  After residency, in Toronto he specialized in Otorinolaryngology & facial plastic surgery.  He went on to practice medicine in Chatham and then London, Ontario, eventually relocating to Arizona.  He practiced in Arizona for many years starting at Luke Air Force Base and then in Sun City near Boswell Hospital.
