A Mother's Poem by Barbara Houston

August 9, 2012

The Mother That God Gave To Me!
She built a mountain with Strawberries,

and they still ask for it today.

She adopted me as her daughter,

and guided me on my way.

She told me so many things about the bible that I never heard,

Then she nurtured me and thought me, all she knew about Gods Holy word.

It seemed so often, I never had to ask,

she was always by my side no matter how hard the task.

 I could write a book , that woman;

was she a saint!

Or,  maybe draw her picture with the most beautiful colors of paint.

I just don’t know what to do but almighty God does,

He alone, only know how for she spread his love.

She had a walk when she was proud,

kind of a girlish like prance,

I see her doing it now; praising God with her special

Holy dance.

Bumps in the road

Then there was the time I was driving her to Dorothy's Place.  We were both quiet as I drove.  She wasn't talking a lot then and sometimes she knew what you were saying and a lot of times she didn't.  I was driving the back way coming out of Whitehaven and I commented, mostly to myself, "my goodness, there sure are a lot of potholes out here," I said.  "Yeah and you ain't missing none of them!" she said. :) That's my mudear!

She hadn't been able to make it to the church building in quite awhile, but she still knew how to have service.  I tried to sneak up on her and catch her "getting her praise on" on May 24th with her Caregiver Morgan.  She was 'chillin' in my shades and getting ready to go outside after her "Praise Party!!"  Enjoy.....

I shall always remember the summer Jean and I worked with Ms Eddie Bell at a restaurant downtown.    Actually, it would be more accurate to say the  WEEK  I worked in that summer.   I had never worked so hard, nor have I worked as hard  since that brief experience.  Ms Johnson was a master of multi-tasking in the kitchen in the 60's. She was all over the place and handling all things well.  Oh, yeah, and she was definitely in charge of everything and everyone!!!   I was given one assignment - dishwashing. It totally wore me out and "broke me down". This unforgettable experience beyond a doubt played a major role in helping me to recognize the importance of a college education.
