Edith Strother Murphy was born in Granville County on April 3, 1917 to Ed and Hattie Jeffreys Strother, the youngest of six sisters and one brother.

Edith was educated in Granville County schools, graduated from Durham High School and Duke University. She went to Washington DC in 1937 for employment. There she met and married Bernard Murphy who died in 1951 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. After working in Federal government for many years, she returned to Granville County where she became very active in church and community affairs especially with musical groups.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, October 31, 2014 at Banks United Methodist Church by Rev. Gina Miller and Rev. Jack Snyder. Burial will be in the Strother Family Cemetery on Preddy Road.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews from ages 90 to 2, all whom always called her Edith. Edith was preceded in death by her one brother, Thorne Strother, and her sisters, Melissa Strother, Eura Strother, Lucy Lee Whitaker, Hattie Jeffreys Hill and Helen Cade Reeves.

Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Banks United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held Friday, October 31, 2014 from 1:00-2:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall of Banks United Methodist Church.
