Emily's Life

January 17, 2016

Emily was born on June 11, 1936 to the proud parents of Charles and Emily Walter. She was the youngest of three children and spent her childhood in Trenton, NJ. She graduated from Hamilton High School in the class of '54, where she was voted Most Athletic Girl by her Senior Class. She played on the field hockey, basketball, and baseball teams. After High School she attended Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, where she received her nursing degree, graduating in September 1957. She began her career, at what was then Trenton General Hospital, as a Registered Nurse in the operating room. Trenton General became Trenton State Psychiatric Hospital, which is where she retired from the state’s medical service as Director of Nursing after 27+ years. During her career, she twice served as President for the Central New Jersey chapter of AORN, the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses.

She earned her nickname “Stretch" playing fast-pitch softball in College. She was the team’s #1 pitcher, and, in 1994, she was inducted into the Trenton, NJ Woman’s Softball Hall of Fame. After her fast-pitch softball glory days, she started bowling and was an avid bowler for many, many years. She also enjoyed a good round of golf.

She gave birth to her 5 children Mark, Melanie, Karl, Kimberly, and Kurtis between 1959 and1972, and, to date, has 7 grandsons and 3 great grandchildren.

On December 13, 2015 she was bowling in Longmont with her Sunday Travel league. A miscalculated step caused a fall and a broken hip. She passed after complications of surgery.

Emily was one of the most loving, caring, kind, and supportive people you could have ever met. Ask any one of her family, friends, or any of her patients that she took care of over her many years as a nurse. She was still working as an in-home, visiting nurse at 79. She will be greatly missed.

Her family is planning a celebration of her life on what would have been her 80th birthday, Saturday, June 11, 2016. Details are forthcoming…
