It is difficult to think that a whole Year has past without you ... many times I have reached for the phone to talk to you.  I know there are more gray hair in my mix than a year ago, but perhaps we have grown a little more wise, certainly more conscious of the Time we have with those we Love and the need to enjoy or value it more!  We are learning to Lean on Jesus more.

Missing you today, so much has happened this last year. As we prepare Ray and Mark to leave for India over the next few weeks, I am reminded of Dad praying over Ray and blessing him on his mission to India and the passing of the passion for India from Dad to Son in law and now it is being shared with his Grandson Mark too. LOVED YOU DAD!

This morning with the turning leaves, I was once again reminded how fleeting life is and how our legacy is the way we speak into people's lives. Ernie was so good at that and I feel blessed to have known him. I know I will see him again and we will rejoice forever in the light of Christ's love!

One year ago today I had to let you go, and it was the most traumatic moment of my life. In this year without you I have been able to find my smile and laugh again, but I still cannot let you go. When I think of that day I still cannot breathe. You were my complete love, and I will always, always love you.

It is because of you that I am who I am today. You were one of those people in my life that I can say guided my way...I am reading a book you recommended; "It all goes back in the box" by John Ortberg. A quote makes me think., "What in your life is going to last forever..."

At a time when truth is a "relative" commodity, honesty is a quality with diminished value, hard work in the service of others is frequently scorned, and devotion to family is often neglected, Ernie stood as a leader countering these trends. I was privileged to be his friend.

Ernie was the most patient loving man I have ever met. He thought nothing of spending time with you until you understood a concept or a task. You never felt you were wasting his time. He always made you feel valued. What a legacy to leave us. What Christ-like character!

I never knew a kinder gentler soul, the kind of person that would look deep into your heart and listen to what is happening from the inside out. A true pastor, friend, man, and inspirational Jesus-follower. My only consolation is knowing he has met the Father face2face. ty Lord

Even though we only had the privilege of knowing Ernie for a year, it was very evident that he loved the Lord and that it was his wish that everyone else would know that joy as well. We will miss spending time with Ernie and we will miss him at home church. Frank & Joanne

I first met Ernie when he and his wife came as cooks to the World Team Institute (WIN) at Crieff Hills. What a fun-filled man, and with a great passion for the lost! It was that passion that brought him into WT Canada as director. I have precious memories of times we shared.

Death can never extinguish the love between us. It cannot suppress our faith. It cannot restrain our hopes. It cannot tarnish our memories. It cannot silence our courage. And it cannot steal eternal life. Ernie's special life will not go unwitnessed because I will be his witness.

A Too Brief Friendship

September 30, 2011

Ernie and I met at a Christian Men’s Group meeting in Georgetown in 2004. At that time we were both at a season of loss in our lives and that fellowship of brothers offered strength, direction and hope. Together we came to recognize the efforts, dreams and achievements we had experienced previously in our individual lives had not been destroyed or wasted by family break-down, though at the time it very much felt that way. That ordinary group of butch guys spoke truth and peace into our troubled times and helped us through. Ernie’s spirit recovered and he went forward to find love and fulfillment in his marriage to Carolyn while embracing happily the bonds of family with Jessica and Mikaela. He exemplified a Father with an ever expanding capacity to love others while always holding his children; Melissa, Melody and Marianne close to his heart and always on his mind.

Through all the difficulties, self-doubt and retrospection that was present when we met, Ernie was never willing to give up or remain in that place. He fought for what he was convinced was right. He knew there was more life to live and he reached-out to grasp it. Though our paths diverged in recent years and we were not close during his incessant battle with cancer, I know he and Carolyn engaged this threat with all the tenacity and resolve that kept Ernie going in the past. Humble, self-effacing, positive and spiritual, I will remember Ernie as out-going and friendly. He loved to be with a group of guys, watching hockey, laughing and eating. Fortunately for me, somewhere along this journey through life, our paths crossed and for a short distance we walked uphill together and shared encouraging words. He shall be missed.
