The Life Of Rabbi Emeritus, Evangelist Lewis

Herbert Henry Lewis, Jr. was the first born of two children to the latede Evangelist Herbert H. Lewis and Jennie Baker Lewis in Dayton, Ohio on February 23, 1931.

His formative years were in Columbus, Ohio where his father was pastor of the 
Church of God and Saints of Christ at 1265 Hildreth Avenue, which he helped to build.

At the demise of both parents at the ages of 11 (Alber) and 12 (Herbert), they went to live with their Aunt Ellen Baker, who raised them.

*  In 1950, graduated from Dunbar High School where his specialty was drum  major.   He was also a member of a local musical group "The Brown Buddies, as bass singer.
1951, married Regina E. Young.  To this union were four children: Jennie, Herbert, Aaron and Jocelyn.  They were married 63 1/2 years.
* 1951-1953, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps a PFC as a clerk.
* 1953 Graduate of Medical Technicalo School as laboratory technician.
* 1956 Appointed Assistant Chief Shepherd.  He was local Shepherd prior to this appointment.
*1963 Ordained an Elder in New Haven, Connecticut
*1960 Appointed Assistant Rabbi.
*1966 Pastored
in Utica, NY by Bishop J.W. Dickerson
*1968 Pastored in Buffalo,NY by Bishop J.W. Dickerson    
*1972 Appoited Rabbi and elevated to office of Evangelist
*1973 formed the first Rabbinical Staff
*1976 pastored in Dayton, OH

*1977 Appointed Pastor of Tabernacle Number Four in Columbus, OH  by Bishop James R. Grant, Sr.
*1985 Graduate of Temple Bible College with Bachelor's in Theology.
*2010 Associate Minister in Tabernacle Number Five, Dayton, OH.
Herbert's vocation was a medical technician at the VA Hospital with main concentration in the Chemistry Department.  He was experienced in bacteriology, urinalysis, hematology, blood bank and histology until his retirement in 1978.
He was a very dedicated member and pastor of The Church of God and Saints of Christ.  His life was totally in the Church and God's work.  He gave his all, even when afflications slowed him down.  He continued to work until he departed this life in peace.  His favorite sog was "He Touched Me".  Favorite scripture, Psalms 103.... "Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me, bless his holy name....."
A lover of music,  Rabbi used his vocal talent as a bass singer with the local and national choirs.  He also sang with the Sojourners Quartet: Bishop Joseph Harper was the Director; Singers of Israel-Daytn Ohio and Sons of the Prophet-Nationally.
He is survived by wife, Regina E. Lewis (Chief of the Daughers), Children: Jennie (District Chorister); Herbert, Aaron (Cheryl) and Jocelyn Turner (Paul) all of Dayton, Ohio; 8 Grandchildren, 22 Great grandchildren; Brother Albert Leon Lewis (Elizabeth), Stone Mountain, GA., Seven sisters-in-laws; several nieces, great nieces and nephews and friends.  In addition he had three godchildren

LEWIS, Evangelist Herbert H., age 83, of Dayton, departed this life on Friday, September 12, 2014. He was born February 23, 1931 to the late Herbert and Jennie (Baker) Lewis in Dayton, OH.

He was a graduate of Dunbar High School, class of 1950. Herbert attended the Institute of Medical Technology, where he became a certified Medical Technician in 1954. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from the Temple Bible College in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Regina (nee, Young); (4) children, Jennie Lewis, Herbert H. III, Aaron (Cheryl) Lewis and Jocelyn (Paul) Turner; (8) grandchildren, Meredith, Dearmon, Aaron and Leslie Lewis, Yvette Hefflin, William Penn, Charlene Clark and Victoria Lewis; (22) great grandchildren; brother, Albert (Elizabeth) Lewis of Stone Mountain, GA; sisters-in-law, Daisy Johnson of New London, CT, Madlyn Young of Philadelphia, PA, Jennine Hammett of Upper Darby, PA, Jeanette Stewart of Dover, DE, Rosemary Johnson and Josephine Reid, both of Philadelphia, PA and a host of other relatives and friends, including his church family, Church of God and Saints of Christ.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Twyman, Dr. Eduafo, Dr. Sequiera, the Davita Dialysis Center and Maria-Joseph Living Care Center. Interment: Dayton National Cemetery.
