Eulogy for Evelyn Mary Coad (Chapter 2)

January 31, 2011

Eve and Percy were immensely proud that both their children had started to forge their own lives, and ensured that they were always there for their children even if separated by hundreds of miles. Their phone bills reputedly kept British Telecom in  business for many years.....

Unfortunately, Eve was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, with which she coped for many years, although slowly getting worse. She enjoyed her grandchildren, Loren and Joshua, to the full, eagerly awaiting their next visit, especially when they brought Sophie the Yorkshire Terrier into Eve and Percy's life.

The final few years of her life were the hardest of her 84 years, after her loving and caring husband passed on, she had to leave her family home and reside in a Nursing Home. She stayed at Windmill Court, St Minver, where Teresa and Nick visited as often as possible, but the journeys were long and tiring. Evelyn made the decision to move to Wales so she could be close to her family, and she moved to Hengoed Court Nursing Home, Swansea at the age of 80!!

Being a proud Cornish lady she found it hard to settle at first, let alone understand the language, after all Wales is a foreign country!! But  as time went on, she became used to her new world and started to enjoy herself. Teresa lived close by and was always spending time with her, and she got to see her grandchildren nearly every week, which pleased her no end.

After 3 and a half years battling Parkinson's in Wales, Evelyn finally gave in and that brings us to today (27th January 2011). Eve has had a lot to battle against in her life, none more so than Parkinson's, that she fought it for over 20 years shows her strength, and devotion to her family.

She spent the final chapter of her life in Wales with her family, Teresa and husband Nigel, and Nick and his wife Jude, and of course her grandchildren that she doted on, Loren and Joshua.

But the final twist in her life was to return to her beloved Cornwall and her beloved husband Percy - Together again, at last and for evermore.......

Eulogy for Evelyn Mary Coad (Chapter 1)

Evelyn Mary Coad

14 Jan 1926 - 11 Jan 2011

Evelyn was born on the 14th January 1926 at Week St Mary. She was one of 7 Cobbledick children, a sister Dorothy and 5 brothers - Roy, Arthur, Jack, Frank and Clifford, all of whom are sadly no longer with us.

Eve grew up in the village of Week St Mary and entered service after leaving school, before deciding to leave the village and follow her brother Jack to the bright lights of the North Cornish coast, namely Polzeath. Jack was working for Philip, Couch and Sons and managed to get Eve a job in the store. This was to lead to two great and lasting friendships in her life, Jean who was later to become her sister-in-law and her future husband, Percy.

After a courtship that was never fully described to her children, Eve and Percy married, in Week St Mary on the 30th October 1958. Married life began in Polzeath at Cherry Hinton, and it wasn't long before the patter of tiny feet was heard. Teresa was born on the 2nd February 1961, swiftly followed by Nick, on the 2nd June 1963.

Life was hard in those days, and with a young family and family business to grow, Eve worked in the Cafe alongside her best friend Jean, during the summer days, and after a long day then went home to look after the family.

Eve was a old fashioned lady, making sure that there was always a meal on the table for when Teresa and Nick returned from school, every day she would be looking out of her front room window to see her children walking up the front lane.

For all her good points Evelyn was not a animal lover and this was brought to a head when Percy brought home a stray cat. This lead to a evening of argument and much raised voices, and Percy being threatened with being kicked out along with the cat. By the time the next day dawned, Patch had become part of the family and Eve loved her as much as the rest of the family. In fact Patch led a very honoured place in the family, loved by all. That summed Evelyn up; she always gave so much love and could never stay angry for long.

As you probably know, Eve's main interest in life was her husband and children, so much so that when Nick announced - at the tender age of 16, that he wanted to join the Army - she stood up and refused to give her permission, as she didn't want him to serve in Northern Ireland. When Nick announced a year later that he wanted to join the RAF, she consented and after all these years Nick now knows that 'Mum knows best.......'. Teresa had already left home, studying in Swansea to become a School Teacher. Little was it known, back then, how much Swansea and South Wales would become a massive part of her life!
