Biography

Richard Russell, the firstborn son to Clarence and Sadae Hoynes, was born on Clark Air Force base in the Philippines, April 1, 1960. In 1964, the family moved to Barstow, Ca. where he then had younger siblings, Kathy, Chuck, and Michael, that he helped care for. He always took a great interest in playing with them, even taking them on motorcycle rides in the desert.  Richard was a natural at watching over his siblings as his generous and caring heart was formed by the Lord before he was even born.  His vocation stemmed at the age of 5 when 2 seminarians visited his CCD class. Family camping trips with Mr. Johnson, a family friend, fostered a passion for the great outdoors and his love for fishing began.  The family moved to Japan for a little over a year, where Richard learned to speak Japanese fluently and truly accept the culture in which he was gifted by his mother Sadae. Upon returning to Valencia, Ca. the Hoynes Family were parishioners at Our Lady of Perpetual Help where Richard was inspired by the caring and kind priests, which ignited the vocation planted earlier in his life, eventually leading him to follow his heart and enter the priesthood. While in high school he learned to play golf right handed, even though he was left handed. After high school he volunteered in the YACC, Firefighters National Park Service program for a year, attended College of the Canyons by day and worked in the family's business by night.  Father Richard followed his calling and went on to graduate from St. John’s Seminary with a Masters in Divinity, he was ordained in September, 1988.  For nearly 28 years, he celebrated Masses, weddings, baptisms, funerals, anointed the sick, prayed, helped many people and touched many lives. The extraordinary way he cared for other's spiritual well-being with immense joy and his charismatic ways, will be missed beyond measure.  He was a Knight of Columbus-4th degree and a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre. He served many parishes in the LA Archdiocese: Saints Peter & Paul in Wilmington, Holy Trinity in San Pedro, American Martyrs in Manhattan Beach, St. Albert the Great in Compton, St. Francis Xavier and St. John of God in Los Angeles.  Father Richard was a highly skilled and versed man: he spoke three languages, he loved fishing, skiing, hiking, golf, baseball, bowling, Disneyland, D&D, cooking, woodwork and traveling. He loved his friends and his family, but nothing was greater than his Holy duties as a Priest, spreading the Word of God with enthusiasm and joy.
