Gertie Rhodes Hobgood, 85, a longtime resident of Durham County passed away Friday, May 3, 2013 at Duke Medical Center in Durham.

A native of Johnston County. the widow of Joel Walker Hobgood and the daughter of the late John Robert and Edith Powell Rhodes. She was of the Christian faith, worked at Duke University for several years and was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, May 6th 2013 in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmor by Rev. Johnny Hewett. Burial will be in the O’Briant-Hobgood Family Cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Doris Hobgood Wrenn of Hillsborough, Beth Hobgood Weddle (Johnny Sr.) of Franklinton, three sons,William B. Hobgood of Franklinton, Charles E. Hobgood (Debra) of Henderson, Michael J. Hobgood of Franklinton, two sisters, Bessie R. Dixon of Kentucky,  Edith R. Beatem of Hillsborough and eleven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth R. Hobgood and five brothers.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening, May 5th 2013 from 7:00-8:30 PM at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home of her daughter, Beth Weddle.

Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor is assisting the Hobgood family.

She always call me Lee
took care of me when I was small. She was still in school and we all rode the same school bus. After she married Joel She had a house full of snot nosed kids and she loved every one of them. I remember her being a very kind person. There was never a stranger around when she was there. The world lost a special person but God gained shining soul.
