The late Dr Godwin Addo Tagoe was born on the 14th of March 1950 at Osu to Mr Robert Mensah Tagoe of Awula Kpakpa We of Osu and Susuanna Adjeiwa Adjei of Agyekum We of Mayera  Okaiman both of blessed memory. He was baptised by Reverend D A Konotey Ahulu  of Eben-Ezer Presbyterian Church on the 18th of November 1956 in Osu.

He was brought up and nurtured by Mr& Mrs E Sam Tetteh and his children of My Alls Lodge Osu and Appiah We Kpone. It was through their kindness and good work that he was able to get to his status in life.

He started his elementary education at Eddie Laryea Primary School Osu in 1956. He then continued to Presby Middle Boys Boarding School (Osu Salem) in 1961. Then from 1962 to Accra Academy for his GCE O’Level education.

He was in Prempeh College, Kumasi and the to the University of Ghana Medical School in where he obtained the Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery in 1977.

He met and married Elizabeth Aku Addotey in 1975.

He was posted to the Tetteh Kwashie Memorial Hospital after his housemanship at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and left to Liberia in 1979 for 3 years.

He then proceeded to the United Kingdom for the first part of his post graduate programme Part I and returned to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He also enrolled with the West African College of Surgeons where he graduated as the First Ghanaian to be admitted as a fellow of the college in February 1991.

Special Service in Liberia He was invited to help in the medical field during the Liberian civil war in 1992 and was attached to the St. Joseph of God Hospital for 10 weeks. This afforded Him the opportunity to see the reproductive health problems of internally displaced refugees. He promoted protection against STI, supported rape victims, managed several cases of complicated unsafe abortion and provided surgical support to the hospital.

During 1994 to 1999 he was appointed as an examiner by the Nurses and Midwives Council for Kumasi, Bolgatanga and Jirapa Midwifery Schools. He was responsible for assessing the knowledge and skills of candidates to ensure certification of midwives to man the various hospitals in the country that would be safe for the nation.

From 1993 to 2001 he was a Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist based in Sunyani, he was the only obstetrician in the northern part of the country for 6 years and received several referrals from afar including neighbouring Francophone countries. He provided basic and specialist reproductive health service to clients in the Brong Ahafo Region. He did a lot of fistula repair and trained doctors to manage obstetric cases particularly obstetric emergencies. Trained health staff in life saving skill as the head of the Regional Safe Motherhood team. He was promoted to the position of Medical Superintendent-Regional Hospital, Sunyani in 1998.

He was appointed a Council member by the Medical and Dental Council from 1995-2006.

Worked with education committee to design, introduce, and implement examination for foreign trained doctors wanting to practice in Ghana. Coordinated inspection of hospitals and accredited those of standard that could be used for houseman ship training. Some of the things he did included;
- Lobbied government to take action against substandard teaching in a medical school without enough qualified lectures and in an unaccredited hospital.
- Raised awareness of the public of their right and where to report any abuse.
- Reinforced the code of professional discipline. Some doctors have been corrected for negligence and infamous conduct and this has resulted in improved practice.
- Drafted new law to govern medical and dental practice- yet to be passed by parliament.

Executive Council Member - Ghana Medical Association                      1997-2002

Negotiated salaries and conditions of service for doctors resulting in the payment of additional duty allowance, cars on soft loans, and the establishment of a post graduate program in Ghana. He also raised public awareness of the substandard teaching and infrastructure in the new medical school.

Clinician attached to PPAG (Link Road) and Christian Council Family Planning Clinic in Nima.

He served as a Consultant to AVSC and other organizations whilst still serving in Sunyani.

He had a short stint with Jubail Specialist Hospital before joining the 37 Military Hospital in 2007 where he was appointed Consultant Gynaecologist and he also served as a lecturer at the Post Graduate Medical School.

Dr Tagoe battled with ailment in and out of hospital for about eight months till his death on the 12 of December 2011.

Although he had 5 children, he was a father to all. He has produced Doctors, Agriculturists, Army Officer,Health Technologists, Accountants, Nurses, Bankers etc. He knew no division between extended and immediate family and shared the little he had with all.

Addo, you were a brother, a father, an uncle, an adviser, a mentor, a joker, a pillar of strength.

We will forever miss you dearly. We wish you God speed.
