Somali envoy to South Africa dies

July 11, 2013

The first ambassador of Somalia to South Africa, Mr Sayid Hassan Sheriff Abddulahi, is dead.

Mr Sheriff had served in the recently established diplomatic office for only about five months, having submitted his credentials to South African President Jacob Zuma in late January 2013.

South Africa and Somalia established formal diplomatic ties for the first time in March 2012.

Diplomatic links between the two countries had not existed before due to the fact that Somalia’s last formal government collapsed in 1991 and South Africa only got independence in 1994, after decades of the internationally isolated apartheid rule.

South Africa is currently home to more than 100,000 Somalis, according to estimates.

Mr Sheriff died early on Wednesday at a hospital in Pretoria, where he had been rushed to for treatment, according to reports in South Africa.

Details on the cause of his death are still scanty

The Office of the Presidency in South Africa said in a statement that arrangements were being made for the repatriation of Mr Sheriff’s body to Somalia.

It could not be readily established whether Mr Sheriff’s body had already been transported out of South Africa by Thursday morning

Unfortunate violence

In a condolence message to the people of Somalia and to the family of the deceased, President Zuma hailed the role played by Mr Sheriff in strengthening the relations between the two countries.

“As the first Somali Ambassador to South Africa, Ambassador Sheriff will always be remembered as having strengthened relations between our two countries. In this time of mourning, our thoughts are with the Ambassador Sheriff’s family. We wish the family strength during this difficult time,” he said.

South Africa and Somalia have enjoyed a fairly stable relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

Last year, South Africa donated R100 million (about $10 million) to the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia, which it said was intended for “providing capacity and institution building, socio-economic support, as well as specified training in key government sectors.

The relationship was, however, tested early this year when attacks on foreigners in South Africa, which were linked to xenophobia, led to the death of a Somali man.

Some of the attacks targeted members of the Somali community, prompting the Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon to write to President Zuma in late May, asking the latter “as a matter of urgency to intervene and contain this unnecessary and unfortunate violence against Somali business communities”.

President Zuma sought to reassure the government of Somalia in his condolence message that his government remained steadfast in its friendship with Somalia.

He said: “The South African Government reaffirms its commitment to continue its diplomatic relations and solidarity with the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”

SOMALIA MISSION IN SOUTH AFRICA

July 10, 2013

Dearest Staff Members, Somalia Embassy in Pretoria,

On my behalf and on behalf of Somali Civil Societies, may we join with so many others who knew Amb Sayid Hassan Sheriff Abdullahi in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how one have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched. If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived.

May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt not only by those who loved and cherish him ,but by all who knew him friends and foes.

Personally I may not have had the opportunity to interact with him during sajourn and the short period he headed the Somalia Mission in South Africa, but without any doubt i can deduce that the untimely demise of a leader of such stature will leave us stunned and the void thus created by providence shall forever stay unfilled. May the Almighty grant strength to his family and work mates to cope with such a tragedy and peace to the departed soul.

Our Heartfelt sympathy goes to his immediate family(Mama Fatima, Mohamed, Abdul Wadood and other siblings) Somali community in South Africa and his Fmr Workmate, ie Mr. M A Mire(Nabadoon) Mr. Ismail Abdalla Abdu, Khayre, Ahad, Ahmed, Sucaad and other workers(employees) at the Somali mission in Pretoria.

In Sympathy,

Amir
