The  summer that Harvey and I were married (1961), I attempted to prepare a steak dinner for Harvey's parents who were coming to visit us at FSU Campus Heights in Big Rapids.  I put the steaks on broil and soon the oven was on fire and the apartment filled with smoke.   Not to mention, the fire trucks were out front.  The only thing I can still remember about this fiasco, was trying to frost a chocolate cake in the bathroom.  I'm sure I made a great impression on my in-laws.

One of my favorite memories was when we lived at Manistique in the Upper Peninsula.  We used to travel to Green Bay, Wi to visit the family of one of Harvey's friends.  They would make a big Thanksgiving meal, and we would go to the Packer games.  We would also enjoy going to town and having Corned Beef Sandwiches with a beer, (of course),.

We also visited Harvey's parents, Rose and Jack Bailen in Detroit many, many times.  Rose was simply the best.  She was a liberated woman and so kind.  Many times she took up to Belle Isle, out to eat, made potato pancakes and so many other special things.  Julie and I lived with them for a short time, when Harvey worked for "Dog and Suds" out of Champaign, Il. Because he was often out of town, Rose helped me with Julie.  We walked around her nice neighborhood and sunbathed in her back yard.  Very special, loving memories.
