His Life
August 12, 2012

Hank was born September 10, 1925 in Miles City, MT, the youngest son of Anton and Francisca (Bogner) Martin. One of eight brothers, Hank was raised and educated in Miles City. In 1942, he joined the Navy serving as a corpsman in the Pacific until 1945. After an honorable discharge, he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he became a journeyman blacksmith for the Milwaukee Railroad. In Milwaukee, he met and later married his wife of 60 years, Joanne Schroeter. They began their family and a few years later moved to Billings, MT where they raised their 4 children.

Hank worked as an operating engineer for The Montana Sulfur & Chemical Company from 1957 until 1985 when he and Joanne moved to Red Lodge. Hank was a hardworking and talented man who could take on any project. He worked his “retirement” years doing small to large remodeling projects including ones for his daughter and three sons.

Hank was a man who took tremendous pride and pleasure in his family. Over the years he shared his love of the outdoors with his family; fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, skiing, picnicking etc. He and his wife made numerous trips to California and Boise, Idaho to visit the families of their daughter, Susan and their sons, Chris and Bill. They were often seen in Red Lodge at various sporting events of the children of their son Matt.

Throughout his life, Hank was principled, hardworking, honest, said what he meant and meant what he said, and funny as hell. He often had a hilarious, pithy aphorism to describe something in a very succinct way. Hank was always willing to help those in need and was an active member of the St. Agnes Parish in Red Lodge.

He is survived by his wife Joanne, daughter Susan (Bill) Kiely of Carmel, CA, sons Christopher (Laurie Stephens) of Boise, Matthew (Cheryl Terry) of Red Lodge, and William “Bill” (Caroline) of San Jose, CA, and nine grandchildren, Jessica, John, Annie, Keeton, Teagan, Isabella, Rose, Bess, and Elizabeth. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Carol Schroeter of Milwaukee, WI and Jean Martin of Spokane, WA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
