Harry Canning
July 6, 1934 - December 21, 2012.

We are sad to announce the passing of Harry Canning (age 78) in Eagle, Idaho.  He fought a long and brave battle with Alzheimer's, and ascended to the peace of heaven on December 21, 2012.

Harry was born in 1934 in Motherwell, Scotland.  He journeyed to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada with his parents Ethel May and Patrick Canning when he was a teenager.  In Canada, he worked on the Canadian Railroad and later was a constable with the Winnipeg Police Force.  He married the love of his life, Ruth, in 1958 and they had 3 children, Garth, Lynn and Karen.  In 1964 they loaded up their car and bravely set off for the promise of new opportunities in California.

Eventually they settled in Glendale, and he built a wonderful life for his family.  He loved his work as an insurance executive, and was highly respected for his business acumen, toughness and superior work ethic.  He worked for the same company for more than 30 years before entering into retirement the same year as his wife.

An extremely devoted family man--his greatest joy was being there for his kids.  He loved the beaches of Hawaii and Mexico and often visited his vacation home in Lake Arrowhead.  A very talented craftsman, he loved building things for his family in his workshop and remodeling homes.  Harry was a dog-lover his whole life--his most recent pet was Buddy the yellow lab, his very faithful companion until Buddy died in May 2012.

His family cherishes their years together.  He leaves his devoted wife of 54 years, Ruth, along with his 3 kids and their families:  Garth Canning, wife Carol and grand-daughters Haley and Paige;  Lynn Canning and her husband Bob Strand, and grand-daughter Ava;  Karen Canning and husband Kevin Boland.  His family will miss his steady, stoic presence, his strength, his rye humor, his relentless playing of his old Scottish records, but most of all will miss his love and generosity.
