Saying Good Bye...for now.

February 18, 2015

When we were at this spot 30 years ago on our honeymoon I told Herb I thought this was the most beautiful place on Earth and when I died I wanted my ashes to be left here.  While he was sick he asked me to bring half of his ashes here to be with mine forever.  I did not take half but enough to fulfill his wishes.  When I took a helicopter ride this morning over Kaua'i I felt like I was flying with the angels and Herb towards heaven. l can't wait to join you again my beloved Herb.

The animal whisperer

October 5, 2014

Dad taught me a deep appreciation for all animals. Indeed, he was like the pied piper. He had a sensitivity and a way of communicating with animals that was awesome. He always shared his house and/ yard with animals of various sorts, even fish. We grew up mostly with cats - siamese being his favorite - as children, but, he also had a love affair with pigs. For a few years in Clifton, Colorado, he had a pig farm with as many as 96 oinkers at one point. He also had a cow, 2 horses, lots of chickens, and a feisty (in a good way) goat named Twinkle Toes.  He fell in love with chihuahuas when he and Mary got Chiquita.  Chiquita was rather a well traveled pooch - she went every where with them including Costa Rica, Mexico and Europe, Dogs supplanted his love affair with siamese cats and he never went back.  His latest dog, Chula, was his beloved. She died 1 month 2 days after he did - such a loving bond.

Those beautiful crystal blue eyes!!  Too bad he didn't pass those genes on to his daughters

Pilot's Toy

October 5, 2014

Dad loved his boats. This is a photo of the first Bay Liner he had in Seattle - he shared ownership with his pilot friend, Ron and of course, "Pilot's Toy" was the perfect name. Once he retired from the FAA he replaced piloting planes with piloting Bay Liners. Being on the water and exploring the many islands in the San Juans and beyond into BC, Canada, gave him infinite pleasure. I think back and realize that he seemed the happiest when he was on his boats. He took immaculate care and was so very proud of his toys.  Dad was an excellent captain and could skillfully manuever through some gnarly currents and sudden NW storms! Of course, we loved to join him whenever we could. He didn't have to twist our arms.

I remember that this was the year that Grandpa Stroh had died and Grandma came to Hialeah to stay with dad and Bette for a week or so to help her through her sadness.  We girls were visiting for the summer at the time so it was really nice to spend time with Grandma as well.

Mixing cement by hand

October 4, 2014

I had the pleasure of going along with Dad and Mary on this particular trip - I am shoveling cement in the photo.  It was a really special occassion for me to work beside dad, who was the hardest worker - he never seemed to tire out - and to experience his dedication and committment to this modest church in San Jose, Costa Rica.  Both he and Mary were devoted to providing a place of worship for the local people in an area of town that was living in poverty and had very little. The locals in the community had a great deal of repect for dad and it was wonderful to witness.  He was always modest about his work but he made a huge differnece with this mission and to the local people who worshipped here. I will always treasure this memory - it was a highlight. Liz

My Dad's new truck

September 23, 2014

Here is a picture of my Dad visiting Arizona to see us, and our trip to Tucson. I also added a picture of the new truck that Herb got in Grand Junction when I was in high school. This truck replaced the 1939 Ford that had holes in the floor board so water would splash on your feet. It was due to his excellent mechanical skills that the truck kept running, and his constant efforts. I learned to drive stick shift on the old 1939 Ford, and drove the truck around the pasture over the irrigation ditches. That old truck was a trooper, but we were proud to get the new truck because your shoes would stay dry. Herb always took care of all the mechanical needs of our cars, changing the oil, rebuilding a fuel pump, or what ever was needed. Because of this do it yourself attitude, I have never been afraid to try home repairs or other small maintenance tasks around the house. I think Herb took pride in his mechanical skills, and was reluctant to get rid of his automotive tools at the end of his life. He valued being independent and taking care of your own belongings, and of course, being frugal. He kept his cars running for years beyond what the average person would. Herb was a mechanic all his life to some degree.
