Mr. Herman Slaton, 84, of Valley died Friday, May 27, 2011 at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home in Valley.
Graveside services are planned for Saturday, May 28 at 11 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Valley with the Rev. Rusty Thomaston officiating.

Mr. Slaton is survived by good friends, Bill and Judy Champion of Pine Mountain and Frank and Misty Champion and children of Lake Harding.

Born Aug. 13, 1926 in Chambers County, Mr.Slaton was the son of the late Bertha Coulter Slaton and the late Douglas Slaton. He was a 1946 graduate of Valley High School, was a graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and Ohio University with a degree in horticulture. Mr. Slaton was a deacon at Lanett First Baptist Church and was very active in his Sunday school class. He was an avid gardener and a very active genealogist. He had worked for Chambers County and taught school in West Point, Monroe,Ga., and St. Simons Island, Ga. He retired from the Chambers County Commissioners Office.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point
