His Life

Deacon Tommie Lee “Lemon” Holmes was born on June 17, 1935 to Mr. and Mrs. John Holmes. He departed this life and entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 8, 2015. 

He accepted Christ at an early age and united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served faithfully as a deacon until his illness. He was employed by Bullock County Commission for twenty-three years before retiring. One of his most enjoyed hobbies was gardening. He had a “green thumb” for growing all kind of plants and crops.   

Tommie Lee Holmes was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Holmes; one daughter, Celie Mae Smith; three sons, Tommie Holmes Jr., Charles Holmes and Eddie Holmes; nine brothers, Elijah Holmes, Robert Holmes, Charlie Holmes, John Holmes, Johnnie Anderson, Jessie Holmes, Judge Holmes, Sam Holmes and Johnnie Holmes.   

He leaves to cherish his memories six children, Debra “Ann” Rodgers, Jerry (Shannon) Holmes, Terrance Burgess, Travis Burgess, Tommie C. Holmes, all of Union Springs, AL and LaToya (Calvin) Hawkins, Killeen, TX; two step-children, Robert Burgess and Tonya Burgess, both of Union Springs, AL; four sisters, Catherine Kennedy, Haines City, FL, Essie Mae Ponder, Grand Rapids, MI, Luellen (James) Dawson, Babson Park, FL, and Lula Simpson, Newburgh, NY, nineteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Lille Mae Holmes and Sallie Holmes, Union Springs, AL; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
