Daddy....a hard working man....

April 16, 2015

Daddy was very proud of his Navy days and trust me, we heard MANY, MANY stories about that time in his life that he was so proud of.  He ran Woods Gulf service station down on Oakley Ave for many years and then moved further up Oakley Ave and continued Woods Gulf....Back in the day when you went to a "service station"....is was exactly that....Daddy pumped their gas, checked their oil and other fluids, checked their tire pressure, cleaned their windshield and if they needed anything small mechanice wise or maintaince done to their vehicles, he did it.  If they wanted a Coke he would run inside and grab it for em.  I can remember people tipping Daddy for treating his customers right (And he gave out S&H green stamps too ). ...  then after many years in the service station business, he decided to open up a tire business. He sold new tires (Kelly Springfield) and was also the first recapping business in Lynchburg.  He started out on 12th street but after the city needed the lot he was on and bought it from him he rebuilt on 5th St.  Daddy ran that business until he passed away. After that Mama ran the business until she decided to finally sell it...so Shenandoah Tire Company still remains but by a different owner.  He also owned (which was then) Colonial Mobile Home Park on Lakeside Drive (right across from the Country Kitchen).  He owned all but a few trailers on the park and rented them out.  All the work that had to be done there was done by him.  I can remember many, many nights the phone ringing all hours of the night with "problems" of some type....Mama would always go with him and they would wrap me up and put me in the car and I would go with em usually spending the time sleeping while things were being fixed or handled.  I never saw Daddy NOT work because he was sick....he worked hard everyday and alot of nights when he was dealing with issues at the trailer park.  He definitately didn't mind hard work; him and Mama both.  She was exactly the same way.  He always looked forward to finishing up his week when he closed the shop on Sat. at noon.  It was OFF TO THE LAKE for the weekend to spend time on his boat, having good times with friends, fishing and enjoying a cold beer (or 2 or 3 or.....lol). He also loved taking the boat to the coast and doing some fishing there too.  In the wintertime he loved his other passion...hunting...off to Buckingham to his little hunting club called the Lone Acre Hunting Club.  It was just him and 3 of his friends that were partners and they hunted the woods of Buckingham, which was his home from birth. But above and beyond all his hard work and his love for fishing and hunting his biggest love was spending time with his family.....I never knew anybody that met him ever say anything bad about him or not like him.  He was "something special"....that's for sure.....

Our Family.......

April 16, 2015

It all began when my daddy, Hubert Wade Wood was born on October 2, 1927...The only child of Kirby and Eleanor Wood.  He was born in Buckingham County. After school he decided to join the navy where he proudly served his country. Then in June 19th, 1950 love was definitely in the air when he married his beautiful bride,my mama, Clara Belle Ogden. Then on March 19, 1957, I was born. We lived in our little white house on Wood Rd until 1959 when we moved to the home my daddy helped build on Brooklawn Drive where Mama still lives. Then in 1976, the first grandchild, Brandi Nicole Dunn was born and then in 1981 their second grandchild, Steven Wade Foster came along. He adored his grandchildren, they were his LIFE ! On that tragic day, which happened to be exactly 36 years to the day of my birth, he let his temporary home here on earth and entered into his eternal home in Heaven. Since his death, Brandi has given him 3 beautiful great grandchildren, Jacob, Carter and Paxton and Steven has given him 4 precious great grandchildren, Tyler, Emily, Mason and Little Steven and in several months the 5th little boy will be here to join the family. So, what started out to be a little family has now blossumed into much, much more. They are beautiful Daddy...You will see one day and be just as crazy about them as you were Brandi and Steven.
