My aunt, friend and mother

June 9, 2012

Iris Alvarado David wasn't just an amazing mother, wife, friend, and neighbor; she was an amazing person as well.  Someone like her just does not exist, for she is truly one of a kind.

When my mother moved to Puerto Rico, I found myself needing a motherly figure around.  Instinctively, I turned to my Titi Iris.  She was always there to give me advice and listen to me.  She treated me as if I were her own daughter.  She always made me feel welcomed in her home.  My aunt always let me know how proud she was of me.  Although I was 21 years old, she would remind me to take my vitamins and eat my vegetables.  I could still hear her say, "Yesenia, te tienes que alimentar."  That void I felt by not having my mom around was filled by the love Titi Iris showed me.

Over the past few years, our relationship got stronger.  I learned a lot about my aunt.  She had a green thumb.  I would often joke around saying she is turning her house into a jungle with all the plants she would bring home.  I also learned she liked the color blue because it reminded her of the ocean.  I found myself going upstairs just to learn more about her and listen to the stories she would tell me about her day.

I tried to think of what good can come from such a tragedy. I thank God for giving my aunt the opportunity to make amends with her loved ones.  And I believe that would be what she would want us to take away from this.  Do not let things get in between those you love; there may not be another chance.

The ugly disease cancer may have taken over her body, but her soul remains untouched.  It is that beautiful soul whom we all know and love.  And it is that beautiful soul who is here with us today and will continue to be with us throughout our lives.  Do not be afraid to call on her for guidance.  Iris was and is always there to help her loved ones.

May Iris Alvarado David rest in peace, and rest in the hearts of each and every one of us.
