His Life
September 28, 2016

James F. Livulpi, a longtime resident ofCarmel,NY passed away on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the age of 89. James was born inBrooklyn,NY on February 25, 1927 to Nicola and Philomena (Cappuccio) Livulpi. He spent his childhood on Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, NYC and attended Cardinal Hayes High Schoolin the Bronx.

While sketching on his own as a child, it was discovered that James was a gifted artist. At the age of five, he began taking private lessons in drawing and painting. When he was a teenager, he earned the opportunity to paint in the copyist program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art inNew York City.

A proud WWII veteran, James served in the Field Artillery Regiment of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Cortina d’Ampezzo,Italy. Following the war, James moved to LakeCarmel where he met and married the love of his life, Jean Lacey. They were married on April 7, 1951 and raised five loving children together.

James was a Union Bricklayer in Local 5 for more than forty years. He worked on many of the schools, colleges, and municipal buildings in Putnam and Westchester counties, but it was the brick ranch home he built for his family in 1956 for which he was most proud.
James had many hobbies and passions in life. He loved the outdoors, whether it was hunting the big woods ofMaineor theAdirondacks, boating and fishing in the Long Island Sound, foraging for wild mushrooms, or vegetable gardening in his backyard. He  also grew the best Macintosh apples! He was a great cook (zeppoles, cheesecake, and homemade Italian bread were family favorites), and loved to listen to music and dance (everything from the Lindy hop to disco).

If it was broke, James could fix it. He repaired TVs, cars, tile, and plumbing, and was a furniture maker, too. If it was ripped, he was quick to break out the ancient Singer sewing machine and mend it.

James is survived by his loving children: Daniel (Lorri) Livulpi, Joanne (Mark) Murray, and Eugene (Christine) Livulpi; nine grandchildren: Danny, Michael, John, Brian, Jaclyn, James, Jennifer, Nikki, and Johnny; two great-grandchildren: Brian and Alyssa; and a great-grandson on the way; his brother: Francis (Roseann) Livulpi and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Livulpi, and his two loving sons: James V. Livulpi and John E .Livulpi; a brother: John Livulpi.

James, a strong, unassuming man with many talents, will be greatly missed. His deep connection to nature and the arts will remain with us forever. He had a commanding presence but his love for his family always made us feel safe and secure.
