James Edward Lyons, affectionately known by his family and friends as "Smut" was born to the late Mary Ann Lyons Middlebrooks and Fred Daniel of Griffin, Georgia on October 18, 1972 in Griffin, Georgia. 

Smut joined Sardis Baptist Church early in life.  He graduated from Lamar County Comprehensive High School and went on to join the work force.  He worked for the City of Forsyth until his health impaired him.
