Jerry Wayne Cates , 69, a longtime resident of Stem passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham.

A native of Durham County the son of the late Alfred Benton and Helen Stanfield Cates. He was of the Baptist faith and was owner of Jerry’s Lock Service for over twenty years.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, July 14, 2013 in the Eakes Funeral Chapel by Rev. Brock Meyer. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham.

Surviving are his wife of twenty-three years Shirley Jenkins Cates of the home, a daughter, Kim Cates ( Danny Roberts) of Durham, three sons, Jerry Cates of Durham, Jonathan Cates(Donna) of Roxboro, Edward Cates of Albemarle , several grandchildren , a sister, Peggy C. Ray of Wake Forest and a brother, Jack Cates Sr. of Durham. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ware and a brother, Alfred Cates Jr.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Brad Rozell Fund c/o Fidelity  Bank, P.O. Box 635 , Creedmoor, NC 27522 in memory of Jerry Cates.

Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service Monday, July 15, 2013  from 12:00-2:00 PM at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor is assisting the Cates family.

It is hard to believe it has been 3 years (July 13th) since the passing of my daddy, it still feels like it was yesterday. He is truly missed and I know without a doubt that he is in heaven with our Heavenly Father - God Almighty, feeling no more pain, no more sadness, and no more sickness. Just happiness and joy among the rest of Gods Children that has went home before now. We will meet again daddy, just not now I have some things to do. Until it is my time to go home and be with our Heavenly Father I leave with a message for you: We Will Meet Again Daddy.

Shirley, Jerry was a fighter his entire life. We cherish his friendship. He will be missed, both John and I are thinking about you. We will never forget the happiness he had when we took you and Jerry to the reenactment in Virginia. That made him happy and it will be a lasting memory that we will cherish always. He was our special locksmith friend, always helping others, what a good man.

Words will never express how much Jerry meant to me and to Nelson. Becoming his friend was followed by loving him like a brother. He was kind hearted and always had a smile on his face and a funny word to say. We shared so many fun times and created many memories that I will never forget. He was such a fighter throughout his illness and was so brave. He will always be a part of my heart.
